Tensor Geometry: The Geometric Viewpoint and its Uses (Graduate Texts in Mathematics), by Christopher T. J. Dodson, Timothy Poston

This treatment of differential geometry and the mathematics required for general relativity makes the subject accessible, for the first time, to anyone familiar with elementary calculus in one variable and with some knowledge of vector algebra. The emphasis throughout is on the geometry of the mathematics, which is greatly enhanced by the many illustrations presenting figures of three and more dimensions as closely as the book form will allow.

Excellent Introduction to Semi-Riemannian Geometry
By A Reader
The authors of this excellent text include a memorable passage in the Introduction that perfectly captures the purpose and primary strength of the book:

"The title of this book is misleading. Any possible title would mislead somebody. 'Tensor Analysis' suggests to a mathematician an ungeometric, manipulative debauch of indices, with tensors ill-defined as 'quantities that transform according to' unspeakable formulae. 'Differential Geometry' would leave many a physicist unaware that the book is about matters with which he is very much concerned. We hope that 'Tensor Geometry' will at least lure both groups to look more closely."

Dodson and Poston's text is a welcome entry in that all-too-small class of books that attempt to bridge the conceptual gulf that separates mathematicians from physicists when they write about differential geometry and general relativity. Modern mathematical treatments of both Riemannian and Lorentzian geometry are typically written primarily in concise and conceptually rich coordinate-free notation; physicists, in sharp contrast, tend to write almost exclusively in a notation that stresses the use of local coordinate systems and index manipulation. A person who is educated in one of these traditions must apply himself with diligence to become proficient in the other; however, this "bilingual" proficiency is surely necessary for the serious students of general relativity, who must study literature written in both styles.

Dodson and Poston's book provides an accessible introduction to the mathematics of general relativity, and it should be particularly useful to both mathematicians and physicists as they develop their abilities to read and write in both coordinate-free and index-based notations. The book is written at a level that should make it accessible to anyone who has studied multi-variable calculus and linear algebra. It is not a complete introduction to either modern differential geometry or general relativity, nor do the authors claim that it is. After all, Spivak devoted five volumes to Riemannian geometry alone and still failed to provide an exhaustive introduction; the subject is enormous in scope.

Mathematicians who find this book helpful in their studies of general relativity might consider looking into the following books, each of which is written in the same mathematical style: (1) Gravitational Curvature by Theodore Frankel (offers a beautiful derivation of the Raychaudhuri Equation); (2) Manifolds, Tensor Analysis and Applications by Abraham, Marsden and Ratiu (Chapters 6, 7 and 8 offer an exceptionally lucid introduction to differential forms, integration on manifolds, the Hodge star operator, the codifferential, and applications of these materials to physics); (3) The Geometry of Kerr Black Holes by Barrett O'Neill (if you want to UNDERSTAND the use of the Weyl curvature tensor in defining the Petrov Type of a spacetime, then read Chapter 5 of this wonderful book); (4) Semi-Riemannian Geometry with Applications to Relativity by Barrett O'Neill (makes an excellent companion text to Dodson and Poston as a mathematically rigorous introduction to GR); (5) General Relativity for Mathematicians by Rainer Sachs and Hung-Hsi Wu (a masterpiece, difficult to find today but worth the effort). For a more far-ranging treatment of geometry with applications beyond GR, Theodore Frankel's The Geometry of Physics is also highly recommended.

After one has used Dodson and Poston and some of these other references as a sort of "Rosetta Stone," then one can become reasonably proficient in deciphering both coordinate-free and coordinate-based literature and translating one into the other. It is sad that the educational process is necessarily so inefficient, but we must be grateful for books like Dodson and Poston's that help us in the endeavor.

Excellent, But Has Flawed Editing
By A Customer
I found this book much more comprehensible than the Bishop & Goldberg text (perhaps because the specifics of my particular graduate program made this approach more accessible). The only problem is that in some important areas of the text there are typographical errors; this text needs a new corrected edition--otherwise I have no complaints. The only recommendation I would make to a prospective reader is to obtain a copy of the excellent, old, out-of-print (but still readily avilable used, on the web) Vector and Tensor Analysis by Louis Brand and master the tensor chapter in it. This will prepare the reader to gain an idea of where the authors are heading with their modern, abstract functional analysis approach.
The reader will be greatly assisted by a solid understanding of linear algebra and a preparatory course in functional analysis wouldn't hurt, either. This material is challenging even for a math graduate student; any high school student who could master this book would have to be gifted, indeed.

Good introduction
By assaftal@hotmail.com
I agree with previous reviewers, and only wish to add a few comments: 1. This book assumes very little on the part of the reader, which makes it ideal for beginners, as long as they're mature readers. 2. Like many books out there, everything in this book is real and finite dimensional, which is a bit disappointing. 3. It's not as advanced as the writers or reviewers would like to think. For instance, no differential forms, no killing vectors, and although there's a chapter on lie groups it treats only their geometrical aspects and not the algebraic ones. 4. However, it contains two (extensive) chapters on SR and GR which are pure gold, I say! Everything is done from the geometrical point of view, and only AFTER all of the math has been introduced, so the discussion is mature and elegant. In short, this is a good book to read for the geometrical intuition but don't count on it to explain everything about differential geometry. Enjoy!

A good marketer needs to be familiar with all the information ...
    By Liange Zhao
The book, What is Marketing, is from some Harvard Business school professors, they provided techniques to understand marketing and learn how to use the skills to handle marketing easier. The book was originally designed for MBA students to analyze the opportunities in the market and use the opportunities to design and implement their own marketing strategy.
The word marketing usually means how much a company value to their customers and how can the marketers increase the company’s value during their marketing strategy making process. A good marketer needs to be familiar with all the information about their customers, competitors and partners, and have a basic understanding of Customers’ behavior analysis, Business to Business marketing, four Ps – Product, Promotion, Price and Place, Marketing segmentation, target market and product positioning, product and service designing, repositioning and product line extension, advertising and media, clients’ extension and elimination, and the basic math of marketing strategy. Those knowledge in the book is going to help the readers to learn how to be a good marketer.
I think the book explained everything the readers need in a very specific way, the explanations are in details and from surface to innate characteristics of what kind of techniques should people use and why should people use those techniques. For example, in page 25, the book explained about Channels. It talks about that channel is a mechanism or network to flow the products or service from producers to customers, from demand generation to physical delivery of the goods, is a connection between the company and the clients. As long as customers needed, channel sales person have to do whatever they can to fulfill the requirement. A marketing specialist Kasturi Rangan from Harvard Business school identified eight general functions of channel, in order to fulfill most of the requirements from client. Those are Product information, customization, product quality assurance, purchasing amount or power, product line’s width and length, availability, Service, and logistics and streams. He also explains why can’t people just cancel one level in one of the channels – you cannot just cancel the responsibility even if you cross out the level. And he also explained the advantages and disadvantages of direct distribution and indirect distribution. Therefore he suggests building a customer-driven system in order to make sure no matter what happens, marketers can still manage and maintain the functions of the channels.
The book What is Marketing explains trade and competition in the aspect of marketing, provided valuable background information. They shared the experience they got from the past and that information can be really useful for a long time. The market keeps changing all the time, what we can do is learn the lessons from the past and improve the market bit by bit.

Destiny Of The Republic, by Candice Millard

The extraordinary "New York Times"-bestselling account of James Garfield's rise from poverty to the American presidency, and the dramatic history of his assassination and legacy, from bestselling author of "The River of Doubt," Candice Millard.
For a man forced into the presidency, the legacy of James Garfield extended far beyond his lifetime, and "Destiny of the Republic" revisits his meteoric rise within the military and government with meticulous research and intimate focus. Garfield was a passionate advocate of freed slaves, a reformer at odds with Republican power brokers and machine politics, a devoted father, and a spellbinding speech-giver. Four months after taking office he was shot twice by an unhinged office-seeker, Charles Guiteau, and a nation already recently fractured by war shattered, leaving the wounded president at the center of a bitter, behind-the-scenes struggle for power. Examining the medical reform spurred by Garfield's unsanitary medical treatment, and reflecting on the surprising political reform brought on by his former political enemy Senator Roscoe Conkling, "Destiny of the Republic" passionately brings President Garfield's unknown-but-widely-felt legacy into focus.

    Amazon.com Review
A Letter from Author Candice Millard

At the heart of Destiny of the Republic is the story of the assassination of President James Garfield. What made me want to write this book, however, was not what I knew about President Garfield—that he had been shot by a deranged man in the summer of 1881—but all that I did not.

In everything I read, I am always looking for the thread of an idea, something that surprises me, and leaves me wanting to know more. To me, that’s the best part of being a writer—following an idea to see where it leads. Most of the time, after doing a little research, I quickly come to a dead end. One day four years ago, however, I found much more than I had ever expected.

While reading a biography of Alexander Graham Bell, I learned that Bell had tried to help save Garfield’s life after the President was shot. I wondered why a man as famous and powerful as Bell, who had invented the telephone just five years earlier, would abandon everything he was working on, put his life on hold, to help any man, even a President. The only way to answer that question, I realized, was to understand exactly what Bell had invented, and, more than that, to find out what kind of man Garfield had been.

After the assassination attempt, Bell devoted himself night and day to inventing something called an induction balance, a type of metal detector, to locate the bullet lodged in the President’s body. The induction balance that Bell used for the final time on Garfield is on display in the National Museum of American History, on the National Mall. What most people don’t know, however, is that the museum also has all of the versions of Bell’s induction balance, in various shapes and sizes, with hanging wires and unfinished edges, that he created while trying to perfect his invention. As I held these fragile instruments in my gloved hands, carefully examining their intricate workings, I could almost see Bell’s mind working, and his heart racing, as the President drew closer and closer to death.

Although, in the end, I would spend three years working on this book, it took only a few days of research to realize what Bell must have known—that President Garfield was not only a tragic figure, but one of the most extraordinary men ever elected President of the United States. A passionate abolitionist, Garfield was not only hailed a hero in the Civil War, but was a fierce champion of the rights of freed slaves. At the same time, he was a supremely gifted scholar who had become a university president at just 26 years of age, and, while in Congress, wrote an original proof of the Pythagorean Theorem.

With each diary entry and letter I read, each research trip I took, Garfield came more clearly and vividly to life. It was not until I visited the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C., however, that I began to understand the extent of the suffering that Garfield, and the nation with him, had endured. In its archives, in a large metal cabinet with long, deep drawers, the museum keeps the remains of two presidential assassins: John Wilkes Booth and Charles Guiteau, the man who shot Garfield. In the same cabinet, in a drawer just below Guiteau’s, lies a six-inch section of Garfield’s spine, a red pin inserted through a hole in the knobby, yellowed bone to show the path of Guiteau’s bullet. It is impossible to look at this heartbreaking collection without being struck by the fact that this story, now hardly remembered, was once a tragedy so wrenching that it transfixed and terrified an entire nation.

This book is my attempt to step back in time, to understand these men and this moment in history, and to tell a story that should never have been forgotten.

    Review
A New York Times Notable Book of 2011
"A staggering tale....Millard digs deeply into the turmoil that got James A. Garfield elected, the lunacy that got him shot and the medical malfeasance that turned a minor wound into a mortal one."--Janet Maslin, Top 10 Recommendations for 2011

"One of the many pleasures of Candice Millard's new book, "Destiny of the Republic," [is] that she brings poor Garfield to life--and a remarkable life it was.....Fascinating... Outstanding....Millard has written us a penetrating human tragedy."
--"The New York Times Book Review"
"A spirited tale that intertwines murder, politics and medical mystery, Candice Millard leaves us feeling that Garfield's assassination deprived the nation not only of a remarkably humble and intellectually gifted man but one who perhaps bore the seeds of greatness.... splendidly drawn portraits.... Alexander Graham Bell makes a bravura appearance"--"The Wall Street Journal"
"Fascinating......Gripping.....Stunning....has a much bigger scope than the events surrounding Garfield's slow, lingering death. It is the haunting tale of how a man who never meant to seek the presidency found himself swept into the White House. . . . A dead president brought to life
    By TChris
James Garfield is most often remembered, if at all, as the president who was assassinated shortly after taking office. Destiny of the Republic brings the dead president back to life. This is not, however, a biography of Garfield. Rather, it is a stirring account of American life and politics during the time of the Garfield presidency, not long after the conclusion of the Civil War, and of a presidential murder. Garfield's early years are sketched out in cursory fashion, his (sometimes troubled) relationship with and eventual devotion to his wife Lucretia is covered in only a few pages, and the death of his youngest child receives little more than a mention. Rather than focusing on Garfield's personal life, Candice Millard devotes her attention to political divisions within the Republican Party (particularly Garfield's battles with New York Senator Roscoe Conkling and the vice president he controlled), as well as Garfield's frustration with the obligations of the office that he had little desire to hold.

The president's assassin is given nearly as much attention as the president. There are times when the book has the feel of a thriller, as the ominous Charles Guiteau weaves in and out of the text, inching himself closer to the president. Millard depicts Guiteau as a con man with delusions of grandeur whose madness was characterized by a growing belief that his plan to assassinate Garfield was divinely inspired.

The assassination occurs at the book's midway point. Millard then treats us to a different kind of political battle, a medical drama about doctors who vie for the opportunity to treat the president and who, ironically, become responsible for his death. Arrogant in their refusal to believe in the existence of germs, American doctors rejected evidence that antiseptic surgical conditions increase a patient's chance of survival. The dirty finger and unwashed probes inserted into Garfield's wound in search of a bullet sealed the president's fate, infecting an injury that Garfield would likely have survived if left untreated. The book concludes with an account of Garfield's autopsy and Guiteau's trial.

Destiny of the Republic succeeds on two levels. First, it is informative. Millard fills the text with interesting facts culled from a variety of primary and secondary source materials, including frequent quotations from contemporaneous news stories and Garfield's diary, to set the scene for Garfield's presidency. We learn enough about the man to understand that he would have made an admirable president. It's interesting to note that Garfield, despite his love of farming, was a scholar, a professor of literature and ancient languages, well versed in mathematics and keenly interested in science, the sort of man who, if running for office today, would likely be branded an "elitist." Garfield's speeches condemning slavery and the unequal treatment of black Americans are eloquent and moving; the book is worth reading for those passages alone.

Second, the book is entertaining. Millard's prose is lively. She captures personalities as if she were writing a novel. She seasons the narrative with humor and creates tension as the events leading to Garfield's encounter with Guiteau unfold. Despite its attention to detail, the narrative moves at a brisk pace.

My sole complaint concerns the attention that Millard gives to Alexander Graham Bell. Granted that Bell's life intersected with Garfield's more than once, and that Bell worked diligently to invent a device that would pinpoint the location of the bullet lodged in Garfield's body, the full chapter and parts of several others devoted to Bell's life seem out of place, as if Millard felt the need to pad her relatively short book with filler. I would have preferred a more thorough discussion of the political aftermath of the shooting. Millard tells us of its unifying effect on a nation that emerged from the Civil War still deeply divided, but provides few facts to support that proposition. A more extensive look at the impact of the assassination on the country would have been more germane than the pages devoted to Bell's life before and after his invention of the telephone.

That criticism aside, Destiny of the Republic is perfect for readers (like me) who want to know about a key moment in American history without being subjected to mind-numbing detail or leaden prose. Millard's book is enlightening and enjoyable. Garfield is a dead president I'm happy to have met.

How Not to Treat a President
    By Just My Op
If the 20th U. S. President, James A. Garfield, had not been so well attended by doctors, he very well might have survived being shot by an assassin. If his doctors, especially the controlling and pompous Dr. Doctor Bliss (no, Dr. Doctor is not a mistype), had been willing to practice Lister's antisepsis techniques, Garfield might have lived. And if the assassin, Guiteau, hadn't been a megalomaniac who thought he was supposed to kill the president, the medical care would never have been needed. As it was, Garfield died slowly and very painfully, and we never were able to benefit from the president he could have been.

As sad as the story is, I loved the telling of it in this book. Author Candice Millard did a wonderful job of tying together the different people most important in this tragedy, and the mood of the times. I would never have known otherwise that Alexander Graham Bell invented a metal detector so that he could try to locate the bullet still in Garfield's body. I needed a bit stronger stomach than I have to read about Garfield's treatment and the progression of his illness. And, 130 years after his death, I am sorry that he did not get the chance to live his full potential as president. I highly recommend this excellent book.

Thank you to the publisher for giving me an advance reader's edition of the book.

    Who's the real killer?
    By James Hiller
I didn't know that much about our twentieth president prior to this book. What I did know: that he was Republican, in office for a short amount of time, and was shot and lingered for months afterwards. Turns out, after reading Candice Miller's wonderful new book, "Destiny of the Republic", there was much more to President James Garfield than I first knew. I ended up with a single question after reading the book: Who was the real killer?

The first mention of Garfield that intrigued me recently came in 1861: The Civil War Awakening by Adam Goodhart. There, a chapter featured a youngish Garfield, empowered, on the verge of his war greatness, yet somehow innocent and compelling. Had I not read that chapter in 1861, I may have completely skipped over this book. Fortunately I didn't, because Candice Millard's book on his assassination poses many questions, and is incredibly intriguing.

Millard's prose is quick, creating a true page turner. Not overly dwelling in minute details, Millard raises the president from boyhood to presidency quickly, from his hardscrabble existence to his later glories on the battlefield and in the political arena. Garifeld, the man who never wanted to become president, found himself the candidate to break a deadlock in the election. Stepping up to the office, Garfield, saddled with a running mate from a political machine, Chester Arthur, wins and embraces the role of president he would have for a few short months.

We also track the life of the crazed assassin Charles Guiteau, deranged office seeker who was convinced he put Garfield in office with a singular weak speech and then showed up to claim his rightful spot in the administration. Millard doesn't swing Guiteau into a dark maniac, but someone with mental health issues that was loved by his family despite them.

Millard's true villain of the story is the doctor who took over his care (a medical coup, so to speak), Dr. D. W. Bliss, who poo-poohed the pioneering antiseptic work of George Lister, and probed the bullet wound with unwashed hands repeatedly, causing Garfield, who would have likely survived the shot, to transform into an infected being. Millard spares no detail into Garfield's suffering and condition. While Guiteau fired the shot that would lead to Garfield's death, clearly Bliss, unwilling to listen to anyone but himself, led the president to death with his "care".

Other characters in the book include a young Alexander Graham Bell, who created an invention to find the bullet, and Chester Arthur, who recognized his weakness in leadership and was completely horrified at becoming president.

All in all, this was a book that, despite knowing the ending, was a complete and true page turner. If you are into historical fiction, and looking for a great plane/train read, this is your book!

The Car Thief, by Theodore Weesner

Described as "one of the best coming-of-age novels of the twentieth century," Theodore Weesner's modern American classic is now on audio!

It's 1959. Sixteen-year-old Alex Housman has just stolen his 14th car and frankly doesn't know why. His divorced, working-class father grinds out the night shift at the local Chevy plant in Detroit and looks forward to the flask in his glove compartment and the open bottles of booze in his Flint, Michigan, home. Broke and fighting to survive, Alex and his father face the realities of estrangement, incarceration, and even violence as their lives unfold toward the climactic episode that a New York Times reviewer called "one of the most profoundly powerful in American fiction."

In this rich, beautifully crafted story, Weesner has written a transcendent piece of literature in deceptively simple language, painting a powerful portrait of a father and a son otherwise invisible among the mundane, everyday details of life in blue-collar America. It is a true and enduring American classic.

This is a truly great novel!
    By Teresa Lott
I read this novel in my high school lit. class and liked it, but it wasn't until I read it again just recently that I really came to appreciate this excellent piece of fiction. It is moving, and heartbreaking, and I couldn't put it down. I also feel a kind of connection to this book because it is set in my home town of Flint Michigan. If you like stories about teengae angst, and the classic anti-hero then this is the book for you.
I do however, have to disagree with another reviewer who said the appeal of this book is limited to men only. It appealed to me, and I felt a real empathy for the main character. Trust me, there are plenty of girls who go through these kinds of situations, and feelings.

    A Remarkable Novel
    By A Customer
The only thing preventing me from rating "The Car Thief" with five stars is its limited appeal. In my opinion, this book should appeal to all men who have passed through (or are passing through) adolesence.
At first I felt the novel to be slow, and quite boring, but I realized that the more I read it seemed the author was doing something abstract to me, as the reader. The structure and pacing of the novel completely pulls you into a world of frustration and depression. More than most characters in literature, I found myself deeply identifying with the novel's main character, Alex Housman. His struggles depict the aimless melancholony one feels as a teenager. Having gone through the transition from child to adult, I found myself fully understanding (if not always agreeing with) Alex's actions.
Theodore Weesner should be commended for his portrayal of the father/son relationship, between Alex and his father, which is really the heart of the novel. Through deceptively simple actions and dialogue, Weesner brings to life a terribly complex relationship that, in the hands of another author, might be difficult to understand.
One reviewer said it best that the true meaning of this novel seeps up between the words. Weesner has placed something special into his work that is impossible to pinpoint, but communicates perfectly the intention of this story.
An excellent novel that might not speak to everyone, "The Car Thief" certainly has a lot to say to those willing to listen.

"Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself."
    ~Leo Tolstoy

Alex Housman is a broken boy from a broken family. Nothing really shocking or unusual that he gets in trouble with the law for stealing cars, which he has no reasoning for doing other than he can. His home life consists of living in a small apartment with a father who is larger than life especially when he is hitting the bottle, although he doesn't physically hurt his son, is he hurting him in other ways? Alex's mom is not in the picture at all for she has started another life with another man and has taken his brother Howard with her. To say this young man's life has its ups and downs would be an understatement, but aren't most teenagers lives this way. It is all on how they handle these situations that will decide what kind of adults they become. This is story on how one such teenager makes his choices that will change his life either for the better or for the worst...you will just have to read the book and find out which.

I am not one to compare books with other books like some feel they need to. I prefer to let the book speak for itself on how the author wished it is to be translated. I also would not say this book is a "coming of age" read; labels like this don't give the book justice.

Although it is set in year where I wasn't even born yet, the childhood problems presented are the same as today. The overwhelming pressure for a young person to do something extraordinary with their lives when life has dealt them a not so great home life is a common theme in any year. Even though I am a female, I still felt that I could relate to the main character, even if it was partially from a mother's point-of-view. I felt pity and sympathy for him, wanting to grab him sometimes and ask him, "what the hell are you thinking?" as if he was one of my own sons. Maybe it could be a good book to show parents how their actions really do effect their children and what not to do. How being an alcoholic, even a non-violent one, can push a child to grow-up before they are ready and cause them to make wrong, sometimes, very wrong choices. Also how being an absentee parent may really make the child confused and feel unloved. {Coming off the soap box}. Okay back to how I feel about the book; I highly recommend it as a book that should be read as it is and not to be compared to any other book. I can see it being a great read for required reading in high school, especially as a teaching tool. Young and old alike, in my opinion, will find it a good read. Just let the book take on the life it was meant to.

    needs some work
    By Emily
I hate to write a negative review, especially because this is the author's first book, but Order Corp was so poorly written that I found it difficult to finish. I often had to force myself to continue reading. However, the editor and/or publisher may be to blame as well, as a fair number of grammatical errors seem to have slipped through. The entire novel was crowded with awkward sentences.

One of my biggest qualms with Order Corp was that descriptions seemed forced.
"...as he uncontrollably stared maliciously across the lawn, he vividly remembered..." [kindle location 1560]

Imagery was often awkward and cliche.
"His smile was so genuine and warming that it could give anyone the same feeling as the first cup of hot cocoa in the winter at the sight of first snowfall." [location 607]

This particular excerpt, inserted into the narrative, made me give up on reading for a while.
"For example, when the soldier wanted to switch to the plasma barrel, they would say 'Command: left arm Plasma Barrel.'" [location 1775]
This easily could have been shown, rather than stated, and came off as a stark interruption in the flow of narration.

Order Corp reads similarly to a screenplay or even a first draft, rather than a polished novel.
That being said, Collard clearly possesses good ideas for his story.
I look forward to seeing improvements in book 2 of the trilogy!

Beautiful in mostly all its spaces. Great choice!
    By melometro
"Replacement," let me say, is a beautiful book. The flap describes it as a prose symphony. I agree. It's composed of ultra detailed fragments, kind of like if you were looking through crisp snapshots of a person's life. And maybe we are looking at just one man's life experiences, his mental snapshots--or maybe we are looking at several people's experiences, the thing is we don't know and it doesn't matter. This blending between known/unknown fits well with the style of the book which has 16 or 17 different points of view that bleed together seamlessly in chronological order. What's so much fun here is that there is no warning when it's going to shift, the only thing you know is that a viewpoint lasts a couple of pages and then, suddenly when it's "meditating" on an object, say the pattern on curtains for example, the entire scene moves. Picture a lens focusing, blurring, and then re-adjusting and everything has changed. The whole symphony part from the jacket flap comes into play because certain characteristics of objects in one scene are echoed in another, think somewhere between a musical refrain and a variation, and there are several of these throughout.

No chapters, just paragraphs all roughly the same length.

In my opinion, the book could should have been cut about 20-25 pages short (ideally ending at the conclusion of the paragraph at the top pg. 121). A fair amount of the last 1/4 of the book really falls short of the rest, becoming overly confusing and belly-dragging. Still, 5 stars due to the quality of the prose and the minute observations of the author, Tor Ulven. They are so fresh you can return again and again to this book and not tire of it. It's literary art.

Time to put Kashmir back on the tourist map
    By Jon L Albee
Bradt Guides are always excellent because they are written by authors and travelers who have a true appreciation and working knowledge of the places they cover. The extraordinarily beautiful state of Kashmir is re-emerging as a tourist destination (as Indians already know) and here's a book that brings it to you. Not only do you get a guide of important sights in and around the state, but you get a directory of listings that is right up to date and a MUST for anyone unfamiliar with this area. Historical and cultural contexts are not an afterthought and are excellent.

Bradt Guides are known for their rich written content, and not so much for glossy color photography. Don't buy this book expecting anything like a DK Eyewitness Guide.

    There's magic in numbers
    By Sherry Torgent
I'm going to go ahead and admit I'm not a math person. But that didn't stop me from giving Magic squares a try. I was curious.

Klur hopes to entice the reader to try "recreational mathematics." Basically, math for fun. Magic squares are the focus of the book, and I have to admit, the resulting math puzzles really were like a magic trick. You're left not thinking how it works, buy WHY? After reading this book, I now feel like numbers contain some hidden secrets like the movie "National Treasure." I have to admit, it was pretty interesting.

One of the first things Klur introduces the reader to is a magic square of order 3. This looks like a tic-tac-toe grid inside a square. Inside each square is written a number from 1-9. Now, for the puzzle. Arrange these numbers so that all rows, columns, and diagonals = 15. Sound easy, right? Not so much. After ten minutes, I still didn't have it. I immediately took it to the smartest person I know to try. He didn't fare much better. I wasn't done. I needed to know if it really took this long to do something that seemed simple. Husband - 10 minutes. Daughter - 7 minutes. Okay, so maybe they're both better at math than I am. But, the time spent watching them do it was very entertaining and made for some interesting conversation.

The puzzles get more complicated and intricate as the book proceeds. Some minimal algebra knowledge is needed to get the full benefit. I found it interesting that Benjamin Franklin often resorted to creating magic squares and circles (yes, circles too) when he got bored listening to political debates. Two of his puzzles were included in the book.

If you want to stretch your mathematical muscles, you may want to give MathFreax Guide to Magic Squares a try. But be forewarned, it could make your head hurt. That's probably why after one section, Klur says "Mind Blown."

Excellent Powerhouse Effort to Make Math Appeal to Children!
    By Matthew D. Lorentzen
Joshua Klur has been a teacher and a student of math for over 20 years. He is involved in several projects that help students to gain an appreciation for math and to view it as fun. He views math as a means to help prepare youth to successfully solve problems later in life. This book is so detailed in it's explanations and examples of magic squares that you'll wonder why you hadn't considered them before. (Or maybe you had but the thought didn't excite you, which is the purpose of this book ;)
I was especially fond of the vast history provided behind some of these squares complete with illustrations of their original form and references to their origins. I also enjoy the little wild haired, winking face symbol that shows you you are about to encounter a fun activity. This would make a great addition for a parent who uses a kindle or e-reader to assist in teaching their homeschooled child. My wife and I will be employing it with ours. Perhaps after your kids put the books up for the day or go to the backyard for recess break, you will sneak some time for yourself to have some fun with Mr. Klur's recreational Math!

    What is magic about math?
    By Claude Lambert
Imagine you have nine squares arranged in a big one (3 columns and 3 lines). We give you the numbers 1 to 9 and you should arrange them in the squares in such a way that the sum of each line and each column is 15.You can use each number only once. Is it even possible?
    Try it.
You will see, it really is magic.
If you like the experience, buy the book, There are a lot of squares to experience with, and discoveries that are just delightful.
