Wonderfully written

This is the second book in the series. I am not sure which one is longer, but I have been able to read them in a couple hours. They are good quick reads.
I really like the fact that it's a strong female character and she stands up for herself and her independence. I do hope that they add more about her personal life in the next one. I want to see what happens between Kate and Scott. I also want to know what her husband was into and where he is, dead or alive.

Well-Balanced Two-for-One Mystery

I enjoyed the first book in this series "Hammered" although it was obviously the work of a new writer. Despite the various technical problems the characters, mystery and setting, and the writer's straightforward style, made me get the next two books in the series. I'm glad I did. Almost all of the technical problems have been cleared up and everything else is as good or better than the first book.

This book covers not only the murder of the town's mayor but goes into more detail on what happened to Kate's (the main character) missing husband. Again, this ongoing mystery in her life is the one that keeps you reading, plus her relationship with Scott, the Chief of Police, her high school boyfriend. I like how Kate, despite the undeniable chemistry between them, refuses to act on it until she can be sure about what happened to her husband. You understand why Scott admires her and is willing to wait. Her loyalty to her marriage vows, despite her husband's apparent disregard for them, is impressive and tells him how loyal she'd be to the next man her life--which he is openly planning to be.

I also like that her being a handywoman is not just a gimmick, she spends much of the story doing things related to her job, but not so much that it crowds out the mystery. This is a very nicely balanced read...if you don't count the excessive coffee drinking! The only nitpicks are that the ending was a bit flat. Nothing as lame as the first book, so that's good, but the author needs to work more on making her conclusions tense and memorable. One other nitpick. Scott hires her to do a job and he asks her to bring "wooden boards" and Kate repeats the term. Is there any other kind of board? :-)

All in all, a satisfyingly comfortable cozy two-for-one mystery.

Our handywoman extrordinaire is quickly becoming a super sleuth. From mild mannered fixer upper to beating her friend the police chief to most of the clues, this lady is on fire. A fast moving mystery with just a touch of almost-romance.

About the Author
Honored as a "Master Pioneer" and "trailblazer of the natural hair care industry" with over 25 years of experience, Ms. Bailey has positioned herself as an innovator and standard bearer for natural hair care. She has influenced the creation of new textured hair fibers, hair styling techniques, developed semantics, systems, and procedures that have been groundbreaking throughout the industry. Ms Bailey has previously authored three books, Natural Hair Care and Braiding, Braiding-Easy Styles for Everyone, and Natural Hair Care- Easy Styles for Everyone. Ms. Bailey contributed to the book Milady's Standard, a Textbook of Cosmetology. These books are sold worldwide and are instructional texts for professional trade schools and reference guides for the consumer. Ms. Bailey is currently a natural beauty consultant for Design Essentials Natural by McBride Research Laboratories and Shea Moisture by Sundial Inc.; she has developed workshops that feature the product line and demonstrate natural hair, locks, protective and transitional styling techniques. This book is a "Must have" for every cosmetology/Natural Hair stylist student

I recently completed a Natural Hair styling course at an accredited Cosmetology school that did not focus much on Natural Hair Care/Styling nor, how to care for natural hair textures from straight to tightly curled.

I highly recommend the Milady Standard Natural Hair Care & Braiding book by Diane C. Bailey. This book is very informative and teaches you step-by-step styling for today's versatile styles and textures from the board room -to-a night out on the town.

This book also contains vital information that was left out from the Milady Cosmetology book that my school used as it's textbook. Such as the different types of shampoos and conditioners that are recommended for different natural hair textures, and different styling tools that are recommended for natural hair. And most important how to properly braid without putting tension onto the hair follicle.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in pursuing a career as a cosmetologist or Natural hair stylist. Also to anyone who has children (with natural hair).

Is It worth it?(Hair Care Review)

This is perhaps the best natural hair care book that I have come across. I enjoyed it because it does not read like a wordy textbook, the information is understandable and usable. If you are trying the style in the book for the first time, it will take a couple of times before you can do them neatly.
Practice.:)

I especially liked the section on shampoos,conditioners herbal treatment and rinses. You can make a bunch of combinations of things to use in your hair as opposed to buying already made ones. Buying ingredients and mixing them has always been cheaper to me, in the long run than ordering hair balms,pomades etc.

My biggest complaint is they did not go into hair trimming for naturals. How to identify damaged ends, removing those ends etc.When growing hair out this seems to be one of the biggest problems. I have not come across a lot of definite answers on this either and think it would have enhanced this book so much more. Along with the protective hair styling's is how to keep hair moisturized and healthy when you are wearing braids with faux hair ,crotchet weaves etc.Sometimes these style are worn for months at a time, and when taken out the hair is dry and hasn't been properly moisturized the whole time-which leads to breakage.

extremely difficult book

A Highly Rewarding Study

As a player with a growing but still modest chess library, it was only recently that I discovered Dvoretsky's name recurring in the books and reviews of players in-the-know. School of Chess Excellence 2 was my first foray into his writings and I have found it tremendously rewarding, though difficult, to work through. Chief among the book's virtues is its willingness to approach the games of chess legends and relative unknowns with equal respect and equal care, and to strike an excellent balance between analysis and commentary in doing so. Dvoretsky's own games, as well as those of his leading pupils, figure prominently in the work, and contribute a host of insights into the differences between planning and playing, succeeding and failing.
The analysis itself is first-rate. As a player of average talent, I often find tactical analysis comes most easily in positions that are already themselves overtly tactical. By contrast, Dvoretsky excels at revealing the subtlety of tactical thought as it develops through the course of a game. As a result, he routinely shows a culminating tactical shot to be the punctuation mark to a rigorous process of continually seeking out the best move, rather than a stroke of brilliance arriving like a bolt from the blue.
As a stylist, Dvoretsky can tend towards the self-congratulatory from time to time, though this may be as much a result of the difficulties of translation as anything else. For the most part he is likeable and accessible. I agree with previous reviewers that the ideas presented are both difficult and dense, but they should not prevent any player beyond a beginner level from comprehending the book and benefiting greatly from it, provided one is patient. I recommend it.

Great book for advanced players

Dvoretsky's book is for advanced players. In order to get maximum benefit one should probably have a rating of at least 2000 FIDE (app. 2100 USCF). At that level basic tactical skills would be in place. However, in order to develop further one must work with more complicated material, basically well-annotated complex tactical games.
This is where Dvoretsky comes in. The book is packed with complex games and analysis of very high quality, with additional observations and succinct advice about decision-making and psychology in tactical situations. In this book chess is a very concrete game - the master-teacher is a firm believer in the power of the specific example more than in overall synthesis or general conclusions.
If you are looking for quick fixes or easily digested "lessons", look elsewhere. However, if you have reached a certain level of play and are willing to put in the work (answering the training questions, doing independent analysis) its instructional value is very high.
I am rated 2200 ICC standard and have gone through about half of the book. In some positions I have managed very well, but in many others I have missed some points or the main point. I know that I am relatively weak tactically so I have to remind myself that rewards will come from the very fact of trying to solve these problems.
