Feverborn: A Fever Novel, by Karen Marie Moning

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In Karen Marie Moning’s latest installment of the epic Fever series, Mac, Barrons, Ryodan, and Jada are back—and the stakes have never been higher or the chemistry hotter. Hurtling us into a realm of labyrinthine intrigue and consummate seduction, Feverborn is a riveting tale of ancient evil, lust, betrayal, forgiveness, and the redemptive power of love.

When the immortal Fae destroyed the ancient wall dividing the worlds of Man and Faery, the very fabric of the universe was damaged, and now Earth is vanishing bit by bit. Only the long-lost Song of Making—a haunting, dangerous melody that is the source of life itself—can save the planet.

But those who seek the mythic song must contend with old wounds and new enemies, passions that burn hot and hunger for vengeance that runs deep. The challenges are many: the Keltar at war with nine immortals who’ve secretly ruled Dublin for eons, Mac and Jada hunted by the masses, the Seelie queen nowhere to be found, and the most powerful Unseelie prince in all creation determined to rule both Fae and Man. Now the task of solving the ancient riddle of the Song of Making falls to a band of deadly warriors divided among—and within—themselves.

Once a normal city possessing a touch of ancient magic, Dublin is now a treacherously magical city with only a touch of normal. And on those war-torn streets, Mac will come face-to-face with her most savage enemy yet: herself.

Praise for Feverborn

“Moning’s world-building is extensive and inspired, and she never fails to keep the action fast and the stakes high. . . . The heroes’ shared danger, victory, loss and turmoil translate into emotional intensity and sexual tension.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Karen Marie Moning is back, burning up the pages with scorching tension, gasp-out-loud surprises, unshakable danger and unexpected feels. Feverborn is simply impossible to put down. . . . I’m not sure how Moning is able to do it after eight books, but each novel proves more exciting than its predecessor as she continues to raise the stakes in this ongoing, exhilarating saga. Feverborn is a fight between ancient magic and renewed determination, a duel between old wounds and deep-seated love. Once again, you won’t be able to put this book down.”—USA Today

“Feverborn is at once the most gratifying and infuriating (in the best way possible) volume in the series yet. Moning’s proclivity for passion, emotion and shocking twists is showcased in breathtaking clarity. . . . I can damn near guarantee that fans of the series will be panting, both with heat, and a frenzied need to know what happens next.”—PopWrapped

“Feverborn is a masterpiece of epic proportions. With this book, Karen Marie Moning shows us exactly why she is such an indispensable writer in the genre.”—Under the Covers

Disappointed again - NO SPOILER review
By Book Addict
This review contains no spoilers for THIS book. I assume you have already read the previous books

I loved the first 5 fever books because of the world building and the carefully thought out plot line. While Mac could be a bit self absorbed and whiny, it was balanced out with a fast paced plot.

Iced was a leap of faith with a 13 year old protagonist, but Moning carried it off well. She balanced the brutal, sexualized world in 1 AWC, with the innocence of a young teen. Gone was the whining protagonist, in favor of a laugh while you're dying heroine. Moning's style changed to include more dialogue and a wider variety of characters. If you have listened to the audio books, it is glaring how much more character interaction iced had, rather than the endless introspection.

Burned returned to whiny introspection without the tightly written, action packed, plot. Morning has mentioned that she was torn about how to approach the post fever books, and that indecision comes across loud and clear in the "Dani o'Malley series", no changed my mind "fever series".

Burned and fever born don't have the usual format of a new villain or crisis in each book that focuses the story within the larger plot arc. There is little sense of plot progression between the books. All the events seem disjointed rather than an unfolding of a larger story.

Moning has again unwritten events in the previous book. In burned she conveniently aged Dani 10 years overnight just to avoid the difficulty in the age differences. Then Mac discovers that barons wiped her memory of having sex when she first arrived in Dublin. Expect another mind boggling "what just happened and why would she write that" moment.

Mac and barons are clearly the focus of the reboot of the Dani o'Malley series. Unfortunately they are missing the qualities and interactions that we enjoyed so much in the original 5 fever books. Their scenes read like badly written erotica.
Mac and Barron's relationship seems like a sexual obsession, rather than a relationship involving any type of romantic love. I know that in the original books, they didnt use the "L" word, but their actions implied a deep devotion.

The sex scenes in burned and fever song are just dull fillers with flat imitations of the Mac and Barron's from the original books.

I understand that It is difficult to write an ongoing series about a couple and keep it fresh. An author that does this well is Nailin Singh in her "Archangel" series. The vivid sex scenes are an integral part of an evolving relationship.

I had to skim most of the book because it was painful to read. I will probably get the last book from the library just so I can close the chapter on Dani.

it is a beautiful setup to the final arc in the story line
By Jordan
There is an eerie quiet before every storm, crackling with energy about to be unleashed. When the hairs at the back of your neck stand up and the adrenaline pumps through your body in anticipation for what’s to come. That is Feverborn – the final piece before the culmination of Karen Marie Moning’s Feversong. Karen tantalizes without whetting the appetite in her latest installment of the Fever series – weaving a spider web of plot lines together so cohesively you’ll feel as though you’ve slipped through the pages into her alternate reality yourself. Rarely is there an author who can create such an all-consuming story, layered with richly developed characters you can sink your teeth into. Not only do we get to revisit old favorites (Mac, Barrons, Dani/Jada, Ryodan), Feverborn also begins to flesh out those once left in the background for an even more satisfying story. This book leaves just about everyone up in the air – heroes finding their lives and very sanity in jeopardy; villains lurking in the darkness ready to make their move; unknown quantities waiting to reveal themselves. Just when you think you have everything figured out, you’re hit with a right hook – and trust me, Karen is pulling no punches. This is one of those novels that sweeps you away – you’ll promise yourself only an hour of reading and as you turn the final page, glance at the clock wondering when darkness fell. Her words will demand to be read as if the book itself is calling to you with its siren song, simultaneously keeping you at the edge of your seat and tugging at your heartstrings. Intertwining intrigue and suspense with shades of romance, passion and a whole lot of kick-ass, it is a beautiful setup to the final arc in the story line. It begs the question, “What do you do when the world falls down?”

Well, strap on your MacHalo and get ready for one hell of a wild ride.

Feverborn
By ReadingDiva's Blog
The Fever series is one of my all time favorite urban fantasy/paranormal series and I can’t deny that the moment a new book gets publish I drop everything else. Feverborn brought back the characters we have come to love so much, Mac, Jada, Barrons, Lor & Ryodan.

While we don’t get to see a lot of action in this installment we however get to see these characters interacting in a whole different level. This book brings a more personal approach to the relationship these characters have created over the years and while they already have set loyalties their alliance is needed if they want to destroy the evil that lurks around Dublin.

Feverborn doesn’t bring any new development between Ryodan & Jada. However, it does focus on Mac’s inability to maintain control of the book, while also trying to find the song of making. Feverborn does explores these characters loyalties, their relationships and trust. I am a big fan of how this story has evolved, while it doesn’t necessarily bring anything extremely exciting, it does seem slowly develop the story that started with book #1. While the story itself is dragging a bit the characters have managed to grow immensely. I think from Dani/Jada to Mac we have finally come to the realization that these characters are not one dimensional. Their struggles and and realization that the world around them has change and not necessarily for the best.

The world has been turned upside down since the walls fell, lives have been lost and alliances have been formed. However, with each alliance there is uncertainty and these characters have proven that not everyone can be trusted, not even the closest of allies. I enjoyed this book a lot and I am very pleased to see the quality of the story move from one book to the other, the plot flows naturally and without feeling forced.

The world that Karen M, Moning has created is full of surprises, action, romance and sexual tension. I am pleased to see these characters coming into each other’s world in different manners and with different level of importance, however I would’ve liked to see a bit more development in Jada’s relationship with Ryodan. Overall, Feverborn is a great read and one I highly recommend, so if you are looking for quality, action and some serious sexual tension then look no further, Mac, Barrons, Jada & Ryodan deliver more than many can handle.
