A valuable resource for the geocacher.

As an experienced puzzle cacher (1100+ puzzle finds and counting), I recommend this book highly. I am often asked how to solve puzzle caches and every bit of the advice that I have given (and more) is in this book.

It's aimed primarily at those who want to learn how to solve the puzzles used in geocaches. I think it succeeds very well in this regard. There is a tremendous amount of good advice on how to solve puzzles. The walk-throughs, in particular, are good at showing how to approach a new and apparently impenetrable puzzle.

Experienced puzzlers won't need the advice part as much, but there is still plenty of useful information here that will help solving puzzles. And it can also be useful for inspiring ideas for creating your own puzzles.

It's both a good book on puzzle-caching, AND a well written cross-section of an astonishing number of topics.

I bought a copy of this book at Geo-Woodstock this year, met the author, and there expressed my most-sincere praise for this book, which I had never seen before.

You see, there are really TWO ways to look at this book. One way is to use it exactly as the author intended: to understand puzzle caches, to get ideas of how to solve the one that's presently vexing you, and to maybe come up with a new puzzle of your own. (Yeah, you always knew that puzzlers were diabolical ... you just didn't realize HOW diabolical!)

But there's also another way to regard this, and it's really a testament to Cully's skill (and perseverance!) as a writer. In the 17 chapters and 9 appendices of this book, you'll find an astonishing cross-section of topics being discussed. Cryptologic history; steganography; music theory; electronic resistors; multi-segment displays; higher math; digital photography; the list just keeps going. Despite the astonishing number of topics covered, Cully covers each one very well. You can just sit back and learn A LOT of things that you never knew, by reading it from one cover to the other ... as, in fact, I did. He stays "on point" to the purpose and theme of the book, generally covering neither too-little nor too-much. And you say: "Gee, how interesting. I didn't know that ..."

In other words: this is the hard-work of a genuinely gifted technical writer, and no doubt, a technical editor. Several years of earnest work went into this volume, and it shows. (At Woodstock, every copy he brought sold-out within hours, as I knew it would.)

I am so thankful for this book!!!!

I normally hate puzzle cache, you know the ones. They start out with some weird symbols or really don't give you much of an idea on how to even start solving it. I usually just resign myself to have that pesky Question Mark icon forever on my geocaching map. Now, with this book I at least have a fighting chance. The book explains several different types of puzzles and the best approach to solving them. Not only does it give you great advice on how to solve these, it the author walks you through an example and leads to the solution, but that's not all, after the walk through puzzle he gives you one to work out on your own. If you have trouble solving puzzle caches, this book is for you.

This book delivers on exact;y what the title says

While the layout of the book is sporadic and jumps around a bit, the content walks you carefully through getting up and running on Glassfish, including an good introduction to J2EE Web Applications. The first couple of chapters walk you through downloading and installing / configuring mySQL and the Oracle Database XE (Express Edition). It then eventually moves on toward database specific issues and design considerations, and has a lot of information on Java Persistence API and EJB.

This book has been my 'main' book in the early study of Sun's Application Server and J2EE. Certainly if you are learning J2EE, EJB, and Glassfish you should have a 2-3 books on the topics, but I would highly recommend this book as part of that suite.

Nothing to working app in 6 days

We needed to bootstrap ourselves into the J2EE world, and were already using NetBeans for other small tasks. Our project was simple enough, but we needed a high quality message queueing system, so we decided to look into JMS. This boot brought us through enough development to have a working 3-tier application with a data publisher, a transformation object connected to a database, and a graphical data consumer application ready to go in just 6 days.

The other reviewers are correct that it puts a lot of pages into JPA and then rushes through the remaining topics, but it's just enough to get you started on the right terminology and looking for web references that will fill out the particular piece you're scratching your head over. Ideally, we'd love to see an advanced companion to this book that would explain things like how to get queue connection factories to default to clear text on connection, an ongoing puzzler for us, but this book certainly helped us achieve this remarkably fast entry to J2EE programming.

Good on theory ... poor examples

The theory in the book on Java persistence is good, however the examples are incomplete and even the downloaded source from the publishers web site does not work. I am pretty sure this book was first to market as a Glassfish resource ... I wish I'd waited for a book which was better thought out.

I loved this when it was a Tumblr called "Fill the Silence." And now it's a fun book for your coffee table to help break the ice at dinner parties. Or for intellectually stimulating bathroom reading. The possibilities are endless!

The only thing that would make this book better are footnotes with citations for said trivia. But maybe that's just me.

Imaginative, creative, and expressionary...The vivid display of life for Chaka in this novel captures the reader to become drawn to the next page. Excellent novel for a first time author and looking forward to the prequel and subsequent works.

The author shares her journey into claiming the old ways of the Sea Priestess. I found the whole idea to be very inspiring and definitely feel a connection to this work. Several times it is stated that it is very important for every person to create their own journey that will be unique to them, and I look forward to doing just that. I will definitely be referring back to the meditation ideas and ceremonial suggestions.

Not the best choice

This book is not terrible, but it sure has it's flaws. I think the final straw for me was it referencing a very familiar legend completely incorrectly. Not really worth the money.

Flawed, but still the best Ultimate Iron Man series to date

After a pair of sub-par Ultimate Iron Man series, the armored Avenger is getting another solo shot in Ultimate Iron Man: Armor Wars by Warren Ellis and Steve Kurth. As the title suggests, this storyline revisits the classic Iron Man: Armor Wars concept in which Tony Stark's Iron Man technology is stolen and sold on the black market to various costumed thugs. In this case it is occurring in the post-Ultimatum universe where Tony Stark's company is falling apart and he's still reeling from the events of Ultimatum.

Warren Ellis is one of my absolute favorite writers, and his Iron Man: Extremis story is one of my favorite Iron Man sagas, so obviously I had high hopes for this tale. For the most part, Ellis doesn't disappoint. He understands the character much better than Card ever did, and his Tony Stark is the same Tony Stark we came to love from Mark Millar's The Ultimates Omnibus series. The story is fast-paced and the dialogue is priceless. I love the new Ghost and some of the other armored villains, and Justine Hammer was a great addition. Unfortunately the series took a sharp turn with issue four that seemed a little too ridiculous - especially the ending. It seemed cheap, and was definitely a buzzkill.

Apparently this was Steve Kurth's first superhero gig, but you'd never know it looking at these pages. I'm a bit spoiled by Salvador Larrocca's work on the regular Iron Man series, but Kurth did a great job here, both on the armored battle scenes and the more mundane scenes. It helps that the inking and coloring are also high-quality.

Ultimate Iron Man: Armor Wars isn't perfect, but it is a marked improvement over the previous Ultimate Iron Man series and a good way to reaffirm Iron Man's status as a major player in the Ultimate Marvel Universe. I'd recommend it to Ultimates fans as well as casual Iron Man fans looking for something new.

Not bad, but maybe too short

The Ultimate Armor Wars is funny. You can see Stark's problems after ultimatum, and the fall of his technology in wrong hands.
It's a somewhat condensed and Ultimized version of the original universe Armor War(which i reccomend, it's a very good read).
The problem with this book it's not the story, it's not the action, it's not the art... the problem it's too short. At only four issues, you are able to read this really fast. Perhaps a more extended plot and two more issues could have been done. The story could have been used for that easily.
In the end, not a bad reading, but i rode it really fast. It's agile and entertaining.

I loved this series from start to finish all of the Ultimate Iron Man minis have been good so far but this one is the better of Ellis's to, picks up a little bit after Ultimatum and has Tony trying to get all his tech back. Only complaint is that it should have been longer, needed maybe a issue or two more then this would have been perfect, towards the end it just starts feeling rushed

very good up to page 140 then thumbs down

Good overview of the special and general theory of relativity as well as quantum mechanics. No equations are used and the author is able to demonstrate these ideas very well.
However the author bias becomes very clear as he explains Bell's theorem . The author points out that no local hidden variable theory can explain the results presented by quantum mechanics. He seems to miss the point that quantum mechanics is NONLOCAL with or without hidden variables . He clearly is in the copenhagen camp but stresses that popular publications on the subject are incorrect in concluding that everything is indeterminate, after all, things such as mass,charge etc. are determinate.
The author seems to accept "in stride" the nonlocality in the copenhagen interpetation and then uses nonlocality as the biggest argument against the deBroglie-Bohm pilot wave interpetation stating that it is a "blatant" violation of the special theory of relativity. Apparently the instant collapse of the second wave function when the first is measured in EPR is more realistic in his view. He then corrects himself and states that it is really not a violation of the special theory "empirically".
These kind of inconsistencies and contradictions are rampant after page 140. In the end the best critisism the author could level at the Bohm interpetation is that it is "epistimological anti realism"
In summary his philosophical position of "realistic realism" ends up being that schrodinger's cat maybe both dead and alive but we know that it weighs ten pounds.

Excellent in its intended capacity as introduction...

I would imagine that the factor pivotal to appreciation of this book is the reader's stage of understanding of the issues discussed within this book.
Particulaly impressive was the conciseness and clearness of the explanations of both relativity and quantum mechanics, two subjects that I would imagine can be notoriously difficult to deal with when ill explained. Aside from aformentioned technicalities regarding quantum physics, perhaps the author could may have spent more time considering the epistemological issue of the very validity of, in particurlar relativity, the 'foundations of modern physics discussed'. They seemed briefly considered, yet tossed aside it seems due to the author's attitude that the apparent current non-existence of what may eventually supercede the areas of physics in question. So, basically, the book was themed upon evaluating reality using the best tools we have at this moment to evaluate what constitutes it.
None the less, as an indication of the perspective physics can provide as to the very nature of reality and existence, this book can be invaluable.
