Crusade!

Engaging collection of information about the Crusades as I was unsure of the details. Shares that Pope Urban II got people upset by saying that the Holy Land was overrun by infidels/pagans. He explains that if a person goes on to Crusade that it will be penance for sin and a person can discharge debt. Also a new way of salvation.

The first one took off in 1095-96. Unfortunately the people going were not trained warriors. They would take the cross emblem like it was a Nike logo and think if they held it up people would just fall down. It did not happen. Actually, the first Crusade did manage to liberate Jeruslem briefly. But the people involved were also known to be looters so the whole thing was not looked fondly upon. An oxymoron to the teachings of the Bible where Jesus died on the cross rather than fight.

Eventually other Crusades followed, along the way more mayhem occured as well as needless killing. King Richard I attended the Third Crusade and battled to stalemate. After reaching an agreement he killed the people anyway. Also the idea was used the killing minorities, really sad. Throughout the book are pictures of paintings including one of the killing of some people, sickening. A couple of maps are featured as well as statues of people such as El Cid (1961) Charlton Heston [All Region, Import, Wise Screen, NTSC].

It got to the point where criminals were doing crimes and then saying they were on Crusade so their crime was not punished. It concludes with information about the Holy Lands today. No background information and hard to follow.

Christopher Tyerman's Crusades could have been a whole lot better and more reader friendly. The entire book was extremely jumpy and hard to follow with facts scattered all over the page with no background information. I cannot imagine being someone with no background information on the topic trying to understand this book. If I have not taken prior history courses I would have no idea what Tyerman was talking about. The Term "A Brief Insight" is a poor term for this book. The book is brief, but far from insightful. I have not attempted to read any of Tyerman's other books, but if they are anything like this one I would recommend anyone to stay away and find one with more background information and easier to read for those not knowing anything on the subject.

It' s easy to read and easy to compression. The author summarizes the philosophy of yoga and its history, in addition to presenting the detailed description of asanas, their implementation and benefits. "Easy Yoga" fulfills its promises. However, I think some of the asanas presented are not that easy for beginners.

Very good content, Very good customer service.

I'm not native American, but I'm Korean.
So, I'm not familiar with many BASIC words for native English user.
(People whose mother language is not English may agree with this.)
There are book for ESSENTIAL 300 (or 500) GRE vocabularies, but it doesn't work for people not American.
Those people need to review whole words including BASIC words for GRE, not just a few ESSENTIAL words.
That's why this book is super awesome.
I've purchased several books and looked through them but no book has such many words like this book does.
As long as it doesn't include infinitely many words like dictionary, the more the book has words, the better it is.

I also need to mention customer service.
I'm using Kindle edition.
Kindle users may experience that content varies as you move through pages.
(Since Kindle use 'location' concept instead of robust 'page' concept to fit diverse devices.
So, you can possibly miss some vocabularies.
So, I asked them to number each words, (i.e., 365 accident, 366, acquire) and they immediately update numbering version.
I've never seen this good customer service.

If you're native or already so good with many vocabularies like TOEFL words, well, go with your own choice.
If you need to review or want to study as many words as possible,

Ive been a little rusty since undergrad years.. Found this book helpful in getting me up to snuff with those words you may have left on the back burner because you don't use them everyday... I think it would be helpful for SAT Prep too, certainly would increase a high school students scores who was looking to increase their scores and maximize opportunities for continuing education in general undergrad or graduate.

I started my GRE prep with verbal, and I went over vocabulary before delving into prep questions. This book is an excellent resource for vocabulary found on the GRE. It's far more extensive than any other GRE vocabulary books or "boxes". Once I started working on practice questions, I found this list far more helpful than the other resources.

Not a bad addition to your Lua repertoire

I recently got this book and read through it. Seeing there are no reviews here yet, I figured I better write one to give some an idea of what this book is about.

Note I'm no beginner to Lua.
Over the last five years I have written thousands of lines of Lua and have done pretty advanced interfacing to the Lua C API (for custom modules), added LuaJIT and other customizations, etc.
I really like the language; it's clean and simple, yet very versatile in it's details.

First, the book wasn't quite what I had expected.
I was hoping it was full of little tricks and techniques of that I didn't already know.
Although it's not in fact "Lua Snippets", it's "Lua programming Gems" after all..

A lot of it are what appears to be more of a case study for particular uses.
Where the authors after having worked out some particular large or difficult problem wrote up sort of a post mortem on what worked for them; on how they solved it et al.
Examples, there are articles on Lua for Game Programing, Lua versions of "Common Data structures" (STL C++ and C# types et al), and oddly even a Forth programming language in Lua, etc.
A lot of which I found a bit abstract in context that was a lot about the problem and perhaps less of Lua as a language.
Although all of which are great if something your looking for fits into one or more of these categories.
You might find a solution to your problem and have it worth the price of book many times over.

In the end I'd say if you haven't read "Programming in Lua, Second Edition" or "Beginning Lua Programming (Programmer to Programmer)" yet (both here on Amazon) then read one or both of those first.
Then if you are an immediate Lua user, and, or, one or more of the Gems fit your needs (they should post the TOC here) then get this book too.

A plus is the book is edited by the Lua language authors them self's: Roberto Ierusalimschy (and the author of the "Lua Performance Tips" Gem in the book), Waldemar Celes, and Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo!

This book was a little different than what I expected, but still has lots of useful information that is helpful in understanding how Lua works, and how to become a better Lua programmer.

Coupled with the Lua on line documentation, example code, and "Programming in Lua" this book is a good addition to improving your Lua skills.

About the Author

Joseph G. Schloss is Visiting Scholar and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at New York University. He is the author of Foundation: B-boys, B-girls, and Hip-Hop Culture in New York (OUP, 2009) and Making Beats: The Art of Sample-Based Hip-Hop (2004), which won the 2005 Book Award from the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. His writing has appeared in URB, Vibe, The Seattle Weekly, The Flavor, and the anthologies Classic Material and Total Chaos.

Larry Starr is Professor of Music at the University of Washington. He is a respected scholar on the music of Gershwin, Copland, and Ives, and on popular music. He is the author of George Gershwin (2011), The Dickinson Songs of Aaron Copland (2003), and A Union of Diversities: Style in the Music of Charles Ives (1992). His articles have appeared in American Music, Perspectives of New Music, and The Musical Quarterly.

Christopher Waterman is Dean of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. An anthropologist specializing in the music of Africa and the Americas, Dr. Waterman is the author of Jùjú: A Social History and Ethnography of an African Popular Music (1990) and guest editor of the volume Globalization: Cultural Expression, Creativity and Innovation (2010). He is also a bassist who has performed professionally in a wide variety of popular genres.

I have always been a great admirer of rock music and this book has last me learn so much history on the band's that I grew up listening to with my father

This was a required text book for a class I took. It is a fairly easy read. There are some things I had to look up because I couldn't gather the meaning from context, but other wise it was very nice. I'm not selling this to anyone, I'm keeping it I enjoyed it so much
