Brady Boyd is married to his college sweetheart, Pam, and together they have two children, Abram and Callie. He has a degree in journalism from Louisiana Tech, has been a radio announcer for professional baseball and basketball teams, and was the sports editor for his college newspaper. Sons and Daughters by Brady Boyd
I am indebted to Pastor Brady Boyd for a complimentary copy of the book, "Sons & Daughters" published by Zondervan 2012. It was an honor to read the book and also a privilege to highly recommend the book to others.
The book is presented in three parts. Part 1 is called The Path to Sonship; Part 2 called Living Well-Loved; and Part 3 entitled Carriers of Grace. I will have to admit that Part 1 really spoke to me. It seemed that on just about every page something touched my heart. I think it is beneficial that this book is written in short, almost essay-type readings so I could stop after each chapter, think about how it applied to me and allow the embedded truth to sink in.
I'm like so many others who will read this book - I get stuck in a slave mentality always looking for something to do in order to prove my worth or better myself within the Kingdom. It's difficult to just relax and enjoy being a son. Most of us, even if we came out of the traditional two-parent family, grew up as spiritual orphans. Not only did we need a Savior but we needed a Spiritual Father. Too often we don't give God the opportunity to father us because we are too busy trying to please Him or earn His approval. It's a tough, never ending battle for some of us.
Allowing the truth of who we are in Christ to become real and set us free from the slave mentality is difficult. Some days are good but other days the lies of the enemy come through loud and clear.
I would have to say the third part of the book - "Carriers of Grace" - dealt more with what happens when we treat others out of our orphan spirit. We become critical; we become thoughtless in our relationships; and we allow our attitudes to become less than "blessable."
I loved Pastor Brady's insights into how the orphan spirit affects marriage, our relationships with our kids and our relationship with those we work with and those we minister to. I would have to say that we have a mandate from God to walk in the spirit of sonship that is offered to us and to allow God to be our Father and to accept the fact that He is crazy about us.
The book is full of personal stories from Pastor Brady; both his successes and what may be perceived as failures. I would rather think of them as teachable moments because God extends His grace to us in those moments to remind us, not only of His love for us, but His love for those He places in our lives. Extending grace to others can only come about as we receive God's grace and walk in relationship with Him.

Brady Boyd Brings Us All Home!

The first breath taken in Brady Boyd's newest book, Sons & Daughters takes the breath away and it remains like that for the first seven chapters of the book.
By chapter eight the seeming emotionally heavier stuff gives way to reflective challenges to the normal every day believer's world and the book wraps up with challenges for leaders and disciples which is what we are all called to be (Matthew 28:16-20).
Brady Boyd is the Senior Pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado and author of Fear No Evil: A Test of Faith, a Courageous Church, and an Unfailing God which was written following a tragic shooting at the church. He is an inspiring pastor with an incredible balance between God's grace and encouraging believers to live free from sin.
Sons & Daughters: Spiritual Orphans Finding Our Way Home challenges readers to "Live life well-loved" and in 51 short but impacting chapters, Brady explains how that can happen. To say this book is life-changing would be an understatement. There is so much healing packed into this for the wounded child of God that I have recommended this book to everyone I have talked to within the last couple of months. It's just that good. It is a very easy read and while 51 chapters might sound daunting, they are small and easily consumable.
This book wraps itself around the theme of finding one's identity in Christ which of course happens to be the theme of this site as well. It wasn't by chance that I was drawn to the book as this concept is now the central theme of my own life. The book takes this concept and breaks it down demonstrating that unless we know who we are and whose we are, we can't possibly live with the freedom from our bondage and we lives as what Boyd calls, "orphaned spirits".
He explains that "getting clear on our identity--and that alone--is what determines how we we live."
He contends that, "the vast majority of Christ followers do not understand who they are," and that, "we agree superficially that we are `God's children,' even as we live like orphans and slaves. We control and perform and manipulate and strive all to secure a place where we can belong, and in so doing, thumb our nose at the idea that God holds us safely in his hand. We all start out in this world believing we are unseen, unwanted, and unloved." This is true as the enemy of God works to make sure we believe these things. Often we find ourselves crying silently in our hearts, "Doesn't anybody notice me? See me? Value me? Want me? Is there anywhere for me to belong," and lastly and probably the most common, "won't somebody please see anything remotely worthwhile in me?"

The introduction story talks of a young girl, pregnant, and kicked out of her house. While gaining success in life far removed from her earlier life experiences, her tombstone read, "I just want to come home." This is often the cry of the orphaned spirit and while God is always pointing our way home, we are often detoured by the enemy who seeks to destroy us. Frequently, we are caught up in working our way to the father rather than embracing that he is our father or as Brady explains, "They are orphans who are trying to work their way into God's favor instead of accepting grace as their way in." They often, "Focus solely on who they know, where they have been, what they have accomplished, what they are working on now, all the many rules they are dutifully following, and how long it has been since their last sin."
Chapter 11 goes deeply into the slave mindset. The author explains how when American slaves were granted freedom, most were unable to believe it or receive it. Though government officials would come and declare freedom over them, many remained on the plantations in the slave life. That is how many believers respond to God's grace. Brady refers to Galatians four and how it says that people who believe in Jesus Christ move from being "under the law" to receiving "adoption and sonship." Often he declares over people that they are free but the slave/orphan spirit responds, "We are all just slaves...But at least we have a place to belong." One of the most powerful statements of the book is, "God never intended for us to find comfort in our bondage."
The sub-central theme in Sons & Daughters is the concept of grace which is absolutely necessary to understanding and receiving one's own identity and to receiving others in Christ.
Grace is the opposite of the slave/orphan mindset. Grace frees us from bondage if received by those it was intended for (which is all of us). One of the best parts of grace is the fact that it is ok for messiness to exist. Where people are, messiness will always exist. Pastor Boyd honors his Colorado church by explaining how it is a "collection of messy people who make room for still other people's messes." This is true from the moment one enters the doors of New Life Church as my family and I had the privilege to experience last September. This should be true of every church. Grace is the epitome of love and he explains that our role can be viewed, "as a high calling, to be a conduit of God's radical love. Love that accepts. Love that embraces. Love that gets messy. Love that understands. Love that forgives. Love that teaches. Love that rebukes. Love that encourages. Love that says, `welcome home'."
On a personal note, this book completely turned my world upside down in a very good way. I jumped at the chance to review a book by a Pastor of one of Gateway's sister churches. I had heard Pastor Brady speak many times and was completely blown away at the human element that embraces all who enter the doors of New Life Church by everyone we encountered. I knew the book would be good and would probably be worth recommending. What I didn't account for was that my very own orphaned spirit would be challenged to receive God's grace so completely. There is a portion of the book that talked about leaders in New Life speaking fatherly truths over the young adults and how many got back in line to receive it again. I received so many words from this book for my own spirit that felt fatherless until I sobbed through the first seven chapters of this book. I got back in line and re-read much of this again before sitting and writing this review. One of my last blog post prior to taking some time off to read and study Sons & Daughters I actually said, "I have four parents, yet I feel like an orphan." That same day the post went up, Brady's book came in the mail. I set to read it and was completely gripped by the mirroring of my own heart's cry. In my experience, I believe this mirrors many of our hearts' cry.
Brady fills every chapter with personal stories to remind us all that we are not doing this life alone. Our beautiful messiness can reach all other messy orphaned spirits when we quit trying to hide behind our desire to conceal our messiness.
