re-issue of an old paperback

While I would have given the original paperback 4 stars, I feel pretty upset since I already have it, and thought I was buying a NEW release. Shame on me for not looking more closely, but shame on Linda Howard for not letting fans know this is a hard cover re-issue of an old paperback that cost about $5 back in the day. Most authors are up front about re-issues in their promotional material. It's in there, but right at the end. I missed it. Buy the old paperback and save yourself some money.

Powerful writing, yet ultimately frustrating.......

Linda Howard asks the question: "Is there a limit to love, a point where it dies?" She believes there isn't and gives a very movingly works to make the case. I give this book 5 stars because of the powerfully move story (a wee bit dated and the whole book, since it was a series, is limited in scope).
Howard does more in a small book, than any writer outside of Anne Stuart, and has proved consistently to be one of my favourite writers, though I have not really been wowed by the writing in the last few years. It seems JAK, Howard and Roberts are suffering from a formula writing, that is taking the glitter off their craft, and in a move to go more mainstream is causing them to forget the romance roots, and ultimately betraying the very fans that built their careers.
What hurts this books, dating and limitations aside, is although you are carried along with her prose, the power of the relationship she creates, you get to the point where you just do not accept love forgives all. I am sorry, if the man I loved believe I was an embezzler, did not confront me with the evidence FIRST and give me a chance to prove my innocence, had me arrested without the first warning or preparation, refused to take my calls from jail or after I got out....well, I just don't see how I could forgive as easily as Howard's character did. And that in the end, it nearly cripples this book so much.
Tessa Conway is working in accounting of Carter Engineering. The firm is having the losses of large revenue, they bring in Brett Rutland the corporation's top troubleshooter. Brett has the reputation of a pitbull, has little respect for women, uses them and leaves them without a care. He is an emotionless hunter that shows no pity, and he goes after Tessa with the cutting edge of wanting sex and information. But he falls in love with her (or so Howard would try to make you believe). But he resents this so much, nearly hates her in his own way for taking away his control, that when he finds evidence showing Tessa guilty of stealing thousands and thousands of dollars, that he has her arrested. No warning, no chance to prove her innocence, no support. She is arrested and booked. She tries to call him, believing her lover, the man she loves desperately, will make everything all right. He refuses to take her calls. After she gets out of jail, he still refuses to take her calls. She finally goes to see him at his hotel and he cruels says he only slept with her to gain information. This nearly destroys her. All in an effort to save his pride.
Later, in an the middle of the night, he finally realises she could go to prison. He loves her (? sorry that is a big leap of faith for me at this point) and cannot stand to know the woman he loves will go to prison, so he goes to his boss and makes a deal to get the charges dropped. He tells the boss he will repay the money she stole himself, marry her. (nice of him!!). He arranges for the District Attorney to call her in, but she refuses to sign the agreement. She is innocent and will not sign a confession of guilt. It is only THEN he understands that she MIGHT be innocent. Now convinced she is innocent, he has the charges dropped, and suddenly moves in with her to take care of the fragile woman and hunt the real thief.
She shows a moment of fury and lashes out with her fists. But that is about all she does. I am sorry, this really hurt this book. She makes the point that she still loves him. Well, I love so I know you will forgive a lot in your life....but you do not forgive this easily.
Still, with all its faults, this is a powerfully written book. Howard weaves a spell that pulls you along, making you almost believe it...till you take a breath and reality check comes along.
I HIGHLY recommend it for the simple fact it is writing craft at it is highest peak, it is truly emotional...your heart will pound when she is arrested and finally comes to grips with the fact her lover is the one pressing charges. Just sorry, that the confined treatment of the series romance, pushed Howard to take the easy road in the solution.

I started to read this and per the style, flipped to the copyright page: this is a re-release of a 1985 book, and while I find some of Howard's older titles okay, the weak heroine/improbably hard male main character grated.

Mick Foley is the former Commissioner of the World Wrestling Federation and one of its biggest Superstars. He loves amusement parks, is an American history buff, and can withstand more pain in one hour than most of us could in a lifetime. Even good writers have an off day!

I have read just about every one of Mick Foley's other works and have found him to be not only an entertainer in the squared circle, but a thoroughly engrossing storyteller with a great characterization of whatever personalities who places in his book, whether fictional or non-fictional. However, even though yes, I do understand that this is a child's book, it still fell a little flat. These are heroes that kids may look up to in the wrestling ring, and I did not feel that the average child would be able to relate to them drawn as children. I also did not feel the amount of time or care put into it as in his other books. Unfortunately it felt as if it were rushed together to meet a deadline. Sorry Mick!

Good for what it is.

I have to say that I really enjoy Mick Foley's children books. I have gotten both the Halloween and the Christmas books and have made reading these books an annual holiday tradition. These books are whimsical and above all try to teach a moral lesson. One thing that does need to be addressed is the need to continue to bring these books up to date as the WWE roster changes. Wrestling fans have short memory so characters like Stephanie McMahon and the Rock seem to fade from memory. When reading to the children, they want to hear about Chris Beniot and Eddie Guerrerro, JBL and Booker T. In another year, it will be a whole new group.

In Summary, a fun read, especially to the children. Each book has a moral and the kids seem to love them. This book was no exception.

Fantastic!

I found this an awesome book, great for kids young and old. It is very easy for children to read, and a favourite among those little wrestling fans. I think Mick Foley did a great job with this book, and I look forward to seeing more. The only downsides are that the story lines are old, the stories too short, and the book needs more characters, for example there were some pictures of wrestlers on the book, that didn't actually appear in the stories. Overall I highly reccomend it, it's worth the money.

Aye, ye got to love those pirates....

This story centers around Lady Isabel Ashton and Captain Kent Carlton, both whom you met in The Reliance. Isabel has been shunned by her family because of her illegitimate son, Frederick. Kent has searched everywhere for Lady Ashton (the woman he could not forget). Finally he runs in to Richard Sawkins, a nobleman who tells him of Frederick existance. Frederick is then kidnapped and Isabel is beside herself. Kent shows up and vows to help her find her/their son. She is apprehensive about him helping but agrees feeling she has no other choice. Once aboard his ship she finds that he has made a big effort to see to her needs. Kent treats her with the upmost respect and kindness. Through the story you see both hearts changing. Can Isabel ever trust the pirate who ravished her and caused her to loose her title and wealth? Will Kent be willing to give up everything for Isabel and Frederick?

The story is a page-turner and will keep you up long into the night to find out what happens next. In the Reliance you saw a little change in Captain Carlton but... in the Restitution you see a change in Kent that makes him a worthy hero. I fell in love with him. You can feel the love he has for Lady Ashton and their son.

One thing I was hoping for was to see Merrick and Charlisse again but they were only mentioned in the beginning.

You could read this as a stand alone book but I would highly recommend you read the other two first for the complete story. The Redemption, The Reliance and The Restitution.

Great work MaryLu. I look forward to her next book The Falcon and the Sparrow due out Summer of 2008.

An Amazing Conclusion to an Amazing Series

Isabel and Kent are both characters that were introduced in the previous Legacy of the King’s Pirates books. Kent was always quite the scoundrel in the previous books but in The Restitution we find him very changed, and changing for the better! Isabel is haunted by her past. Having been ravished by a pirate and left with a child, Isabel is all but alone in the world. When her son is kidnapped, she must look to Kent, the father of the child, to help her retrieve her lost child.
This was probably my favorite of the three books. I loved the story of Merrick and Charlisse but I loved Kent and Isabel’s story just a little more. I loved that we could see the change over Kent throughout the series. I found myself being drawn to Kent, despite his past. This whole story was filled with unexpected twists and turns that you didn’t see coming. This book will bring you on an adventure that will keep you intrigued right up to the very end. It was a wonderful ending to the series and the only thing I’m disappointed with is the fact that the series is over.

Another for the can't put down list from Mary Lu Tyndall

I cannot believe Mary Lu got me to like Kent! I never thought that would be possible.

Lady Isabel Ashton is the main character in this one. You hear Merrick and Charlisse mentioned one time in the first few chapters of the book. But all that is said is they are living in North Carolina now. I was really upset at them not returning. I thought early on - I was not going to enjoy it as much for in the last book I was not fond of Isabel and Kent as characters.

So at first I started the book with a chip on my shoulder. But as soon as she got the story going I was hooked. Once again, Mary Lu wrote a book that I could not put down.

This book had two situations unfolding. The story of Kent and Isabel and one of Hann seeking revenge for his/her brother. What a suprise twist on that character.

If you read the first two, this is one you have to read. And it will not let you down.

The only thing that bothered me about these books were the cover art. All three girls looked different on the front. So if we assume the first book had Charlisse on it, and this last one Lady Isabel, which one was on the second cover? It did not resemble either of the others. And the guy on the second also did not fit with the other books. But that was about all I did not like about these three books.

A MUST for anyone who loves typography!

Dan Solo's book has the most beutiful fonts I've seen. He has a love of typography, and this comes out not just in the quality and number of fonts, but in the manner they are presented. I did my wedding invites with these fonts, and keep looking for reasons to bring back such beautiful typefaces as Nicholas Cochin, or authentic Gold Rush era such as Smuggler, French Kate, and Lyons Egyptian.

this is a great book to get really inspired

this is a great book to get really inspired and makes to instantly want to create something beatifull with it. Only problem is to get it in your computer system (digitalize it) which takes me about one hour for most headline fonts which don't need so much car

Wow! What a Nice Collection of Type!

I received my Solotype Catalog today and it was beyond anything I expected! I have worked with type for over 60 years and this is a wonderful collection of type and includes the colorful 19th Century fonts as well as recent fonts (to 1992). Special effects are well presented. This book is a must for anyone interested in type and letterforms.
