An Encyclopaedia of Hacking

Taylor's Hackers is anextended and rigorous analyses of hacking as illicit computer intrusion (or cracking as some insist it should be called. Taylor explores in detail the nature of hacking from every angle. His book is based on over 60 in-depth interviews and is written sympathetically, treating hackers as human rather than as pathological teenagers. It is essential reading for anyone interested in Hackers. There are only two extended, academic pieces on hacking, this book and the complementary statistical analysis by John Howard (available at [...] also has the advantage of being accessible and well-written. Perhaps the best way to look at this book is as an encyclopaedia of hacking, because it provides extended quotes from hackers, computer security personnel and interested others (journalists, academics, etc.) on all relevant topics. An excellent piece of work.

The first major intellectually rigorous study of hacking

Twenty five years ago when I was starting out in my career as a computer barrister I ran into an elderly Queen's Counsel and got chatting. "I'll have none of your computery Kelman" he replied when I started talking about technology. 'Computery' was a word the QC made up on the spot which exactly matched his way of thinking - computers were magical and "computery" was like sorcery - a black art perpetrated by young dangerous wizards who did not know they place.
Dr Taylor's book takes the reader into this world where the establishment were frightened and yet fascinated by the 'computery', where young immature men (for it was mainly men) sought to use hacking to raise their social prestige and where hysteria and hype created a modern day Salem with show trials on both sides of the Atlantic. But while some of the hackers deserve to be considered young investigative journalists a large number engaged in primitive tribal rituals using their technical abilities in arcane coding for the pursuit of power without responsibility.
Dr Taylor documents this phenomenon and a revealing picture of the late twentieth century "new barbarian" culture (to use a phrase popularised by Professor Ian Angell of the London School of Academics). How society will embrace and extend its power over hackers with share options, main board directorships and new academic posts instead of punitive sanctions is the unwritten text of a latent follow-up volume.
This book on hackers is the first major intellectually rigorous study of this social phenomenon. I can commend it as required reading for anyone who is interested in the way society approaches threats which undermine the pecking order of society. Filled with quotes from the hackers themselves and visionary authors it is a mind expanding piece of literature which teaches while it entertains. Buy it.

A Cracking Good Read!

This is the first serious study I have seen of a generally media sensationalised area. Being straight from the hackers' mouths, the source material gives a more balanced view than those given by previous authors who tend to be overly moralistic and prejudiced in their approach to the subject. True impartiality is on display as well as meticulous research. Well done Dr. Taylor. I found the grammatically ludicrous, error strewn review of Mr. Yamane particularly unhelpful and inaccurate. People in grass houses shouldn't throw stones.

This is his last book with new poems. He is regarded as one of America's greatest poets. Among his many honors are four Pulitzer Prizes and an appointment as Consultant in Poetry at the Library of Congress.

At John F. Kennedy's inauguration on Jan. 20, 1961, he was called the Poet Laurete of U. S. A. to be acknowledged by such an educated president to take part. He was such an old man, he fumbled his papers, as he read "The Gift Outright." This was the first time when a poet had been so honored and marked a high point in his long and distinguished career.

When the English poet W. H. Auden wrote an essay in praise of Robert Frost, he made the observation that he was literally in a class by himself: "the class of nature poets who have worked with the land and actually know how to milk cows and, in general, can life the life of a Yankee farmer. In his elder years, in Florida, he planted orange groves and other fruits.

He was more than a poet and man of letters. He was a public figure and had by the time of his death in 1963 become a nation's symbol. His most famous poems are "Stopping by Wood on a Snowy Evening" and "Mending Wall." In his book, NORTH OF BOSTON, you will find a long poem/fable called "The Generations of Man."

From north to south across the blue.
A fpercing little star was (shining) thru.

About the Author
Alan J. Marcus is a Professor of Finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. His main research interests are in derivatives and securities markets. He is co-author (with Zvi Bodie and Alex Kane) of the texts Investments and Essentials of Investments. Professor Marcus has served as a research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Marcus also spent two years at Freddie Mac, where he helped to develop mortgage pricing and credit risk models. He currently serves on the Research Foundation Advisory Board of the CFA Institute.

Zvi Bodie is professor of finance and economics at Boston University School of Management. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has served on the finance faculty at Harvard Business School and MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Professor Bodie has published widely on pension finance and investment strategy in leading professional journals. His books include Worry-Free Investing: A safe Approach to Achieving your Lifetime Financial Goals and Foundations of Pension Finance. Professor Bodie is managing director of Integrated Finance Limited, a specialized investment bank and financial engineering company. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Pension Research Council. 

Professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He has been visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and pricing of options.

Okay book but the e-book version doesn't include the same materials.

The book covers the subject matter well. I think the authors do a fine job of explaining different investments. However, I purchased the digital edition and it does not come with the additional online resources. I was very disappointed by this because the text links directly to the Mcgraw Hill online learning center which provides excel templates which are useful in doing the homework and investment analysis. It does not state anywhere in the information that you do not get the online access codes. I would recommend the physical copy so you can get the access code. I usually prefer e-books as it is easier to carry them and have all the books you need for classes in one place but this is just another example of how buying books online over complicates the process of picking the right book.

Comprehensive and worth reading

I use this book for my Investments course at Dartmouth, and I find it to be a very useful companion text. It is extremely comprehensive, with sections on pretty much everything you would want within this sphere. it is also relatively readable, with a logical layout and good explanations for most of the main points.

The downsides is that it is very expensive, although no ore so that other similar texts. Overall, it comes very recommended for those who wish to develop a strong understanding of capital markets and investing.

Good but not perfect. Caters to the CFA takers

This book deals primarily with equity and bond investment finance. This is not a general finance book. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book, for example, to those who want to study corporate finance.

The book does a quite good, but not perfect, job of explaining the elegant finance subject matters such as CAPM, bond pricing, and risk management. For example, although I knew that higher stocks with higher Beta must have higher return than stocks with lower Beta (assuming CAPM is true), the book never bothers to explain precisely why. One must deduct the reasons from the CAPM assumptions and equations, which is not always intuitive.

The book also provides second set of questions for those who are studying for the CFA. I don't know how closely the book's questions resembles the real CFA questions.

I wish the book had more Excel examples and problems. Although the book does not ignore Excel, most of the problems and solutions involve using a calculator. Given that Excel, not the calculator, is the principle tool of finance (and even Excel is being upstaged by data analytics using terabytes of data), I thought the book was little too old fashioned in its examples, problems, and solutions.

Overall, this is a nice textbook with some of the best explainations of finance concepts I have ever read.

A good book...buy it

I have been teaching the bible for over 30 years. I believe we should never stop learning, that means you can always learn something from someone else. I gave this book only three stars for 2 reasons. First i did learn a few new insights. Most of it was very basic. Second there were several chapters where I think it was more of perry's theology made to fit into. The scriptures. That being said I still would encourage people to read this book.
