Professional Service Firm Manager? Read This Book

I run a professional services firm in the government contracting space for over a decade. I first read this when I founded the firm, but didnt take much of this to heart because the focus was more on startup. Now, as a mature professional firm owner and manager, I re-read it and found it invaluable. In fact, I have made this essential reading for all managers and up at the firm. Even if no one reads it, I know I have internalized it. The book has forever shaped my view of leading and managing a professional services firm. It would rank among the top 3 of all business books I have read, period.

Practical and very accessible

This text is a classic resource on the professional service firm, and as a consultant this reviewer appreciates the accumulated wealth of knowledge the author graciously decided to share. The content that Maister provides here is practical and very accessible, and consists mainly of articles published separately over a 10-year time period within such publications as "Sloan Management Review", the "Journal of Management Consulting", "International Accounting Bulletin", and "The American Lawyer". While most of these articles refer to professional service firms as partnerships, the vast majority of the material is still applicable to other types of firms, including the limited liability company (LLC). And the title might suggest a management audience, but the content is important for all associated professionals, including new associates. Because this book is so well written, this reviewer also recommends a reading by those considering work in this field, either those still studying at the university or those contemplating a professional transition. There is no other book quite like "Managing the Professional Service Firm", even though it has been over 15 years since its first appearance (1993) and a host of other texts have entered this space, especially after the late-1990s boom in consulting. The foundation of this book is the simplified mission statement that Maister indicates is the same, with varying refinements, for most professional service firms: "To deliver outstanding client service; to provide fulfilling careers and professional satisfaction for our people; and to achieve financial success so that we can reward ourselves and grow". Probably no coverage of this book can quite deliver justice to its quality. This reviewer set out to list several of the articles which they consider to be above and beyond the rest, but it was difficult to include all but just a small minority of the chapters. The strength of the content is slightly skewed toward the first half of the book, but strong articles persist throughout the 7 sections covering basic matters such as balancing company composition and profitability, client matters such as listening and marketing to clients, people matters such as motivation and scheduling, management matters such as strategy, partnership matters such as performance and compensation, and multisite matters. Highly recommended.

Excellent for Law Firm Managing Partners

I purchased this book out of sheer luck, by reading a review to law firm start up book that recommended professional services firm management books.

I am a East European Lawyer and feel empowered and enlighted when reading this book. Its style is user-friendly. In particular, I liked and appreciated the chapter on what clients expect from professional servicepersons.

I have not yet read all its chapters, but those I did, I read several times and each time new helpfull skills come to my attention.

As a lawyer, new tothis type of source of information, I was not expecting I could find such a book, of such a high quality.

About the Author
Frederick Crews is a professor emeritus of English at the University of California at Berkeley. His many books include The Critics Bear It Away: American Fiction and the Academy, The Random House Handbook (currently in its sixth edition), and Postmodern Pooh.

The Pooh Perplex

I first read The Pooh Perplex in the summer before my freshman year of college; my father presented it to me as an encapsulation of the reasons why he had abandoned his English major. I had not yet encountered Leavis, Crane, and the other critics so marvelously parodied in Crews's book, but I spent a good few hours shrieking with laughter at Myron Masterson's vision of Kanga as castrating "'Mom' figure" and Simon Lacerous's characterization of the bear himself as a flabby old Tory with a string of knightly titles and an overfondness for condensed milk.

Then I came to college and took a Literary Criticism and Theory class; with wonder, I recognized in my casebook more and more of the bizarre characters inhabiting Crews's topsy-turvy hermeneutic milieu. Oddest of all, I found that my reading of The Pooh Perplex had actually provided me with a fairly solid overview of structuralism, Marxist theory, and other critical concoctions my professor obliged me to imbibe. And when I gave Crews's work a second reading, I discovered a myriad of hilarities that had previously passed me by.

Though it is depressing that Crews's zany satire can help a student of literature grasp the principal critical theories of the past fifty years, I disagree with my father's justification for forsaking his major. Many critics unintentionally self-parody; to endure their bombast, the reader must absorb the good, dismiss the inane, and find in the ludicrous a scrap or two of humor. Fortunately, we have Crews to assist us with that last task. Satire is a dying art; read The Pooh Perplex to understand why it is still necessary.

Brilliant and funny

It was probably the publication of Postmodern Pooh, Frederick Crews's second venture into Pooh studies, that explains the renewed availability of The Pooh Perplex more than 40 years after its first appearance. But whatever the reason, it is an excellent thing that modern readers can get hold of it, both because it is a brilliant and witty book in itself and also because it makes a natural companion for Postmodern Pooh.

For those who have not met the book before it should be explained that it is a series of parodies of different styles of literary criticism (those that were fashionable in the 1960s) applied to Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, collected together as a "case book" of the kind that was then popular for elementary English courses, and accompanied by Questions and Study Projects prepared by the editor, ostensibly Crews himself, but in reality as much of a parody as the articles themselves.

No doubt one would need to be familiar already with the parodied styles to get the most from the book, but no matter; one can get a great deal of amusement from it without any specialist knowledge, and some of the sources are fairly obvious even to non-specialists, the Freudian analysis by "Karl Anschauung", for example, or the proletarian analysis by "Martin Tempralis". On the other hand, readers born since the book was written may not easily recognize F. R. Leavis thinly disguised as "Simon Lacerous".

The non-specialist reader will easily be tempted to believe that Crews is exaggerating. Surely no serious expert on English literature could really express some of the sillier ideas expressed in this book? Alas, he amply demonstrates with real quotations from real (and apparently serious) publications that they could and they did.

Keep You In Confusion

Frederick Crews made his name back in 1963 with this punchy, sardonic parody of academic self-importance. Over 45 years later, it retains its power to cut to the quick. Though not laugh-out-loud hilarious, it has a wit that exposes truth to the light of day. Though it goes on a bit longer than is actually necessary to prove its point, it remains a reminder to those of us who work with words and ideas of why we need to be humble.

In his facetious introduction, Crews tells eager freshman that this book "is frankly designed to keep you in confusion." Since too many freshman texts to exactly that, this take is all too just. The satirical articles then go on to deflate the most pompous mid-century literary critics, including Lacan, Bloom, and Eliot. Some of the references may be dated, but even if we don't recognize all of Crews' individual targets, we know the type.

The paradoxical aspect is that this book could almost be used to teach how to do criticism correctly. By mocking what the various schools do wrong to make themselves ridiculous, Crews also shows how they can be made communicative and useful. That being the case, every English major should have a copy of this book thrust into their hands. Literate and dense, but readable and funny, this is a must for all of us working in the humanities.

About the Author

Tom McCourt is a native son of the deserts and canyons of eastern Utah. An avid outdoorsman, he has worked as a farmer, a cowboy, a surveyor, a coalminer, a social worker, a newspaper staff writer and columnist, and a tour guide. Tom has a degree in Anthropology from the University of Utah and served as an Officer and a Gentleman in the U.S. Army. He and his wife Jeannie make their home in rural Carbon County, Utah.

An excellent, true Western Novel....at last !!

An excellent western....and all true. This book would make an excellent movie and I hope it is discovered as such. The beauty of the landscape where the action takes place can not be described, and I yearn to go back there. A truly exciting book to read, especially when you know it is a true story.

Best Book I've Ever Read.

Tom did a great job writting this book. Im glad my grandpa finally got someone to put his stories into an amazing book. I don't really like reading, but once i picked this book up, i couldn't put it down. After listening to my grandpa for many years and hunting in the area where this whole book took place, its kind of crazy to see how it all comes together so perfect. Hope this turns into a movie someday.

A peek into Moab, Utah's past

Last of the Robber's Roost Outlaws is a fun local history book. Based on interviews with Bill Tibbetts' family, friends, and neighbors, the author states that he has fictionalized some dialogue, but backs up his interpretations with solid history. As a frequent visitor to the Moab, Utah area, I was delighted to learn the inside scoop on its rugged past. Did I mention there are lots of photos, and copies of newspaper clippings from that period?

WORSHIP AS A LIFESTYLE

Worship as a Lifestyle – This book addresses the principle of processing the Word of God into every day life. It’s the daily practice of obtaining that which is spiritual and, through one’s awareness of a God-given purpose, functioning in that purpose for the advancement of the Kingdom of God.

Herein a challenge is presented - How does a worshipper make applicable the spiritual transformation necessary to walk out the process of dying to one’s self, so the lifestyle of worship becomes the preeminent thing?

Jesus states in Matthew 24:4 (KJV), “Take heed that no man deceive you……” If Jesus had to specifically warn His disciples against deception, the possibility of its existence was very real, as it certainly is now. The nature of deception is for it to be there without you recognizing it. Let me say that again: The nature of deception is for it to be right there - staring you in the face - without you knowing that it’s name is deception.

I have found that when dealing with the subject of worship, the enemy - who is very familiar with what worship is and what it does for the believer - attempts to send the spirit of deception to those desiring to understand precisely what worship is, so that they will never reach their God-given potential in the Kingdom. This spirit of deception must be therefore uncovered by the worshipper, through study of the word of God, divine revelation and the worshipper making the conscious decision to live a holy life, in the midst of a society whose practices are not conducive to what the Lord has commanded in the scriptures.

Many people today are walking around unaware – not knowing that they’re deceived. They feel that they are right and just, living and walking according to the Word of God; but Jesus warned the disciples against being deceived. Why? In verse 5 He says: “For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” Jesus knew that imposters would come - with impressive gifts, performing miracles and quoting scriptures; but gifts, in themselves, aren’t impressive to God. He is the Creator of all gifts. Being able to rattle off the scriptures isn’t impressive to God. He wrote the book! Lucifer was gifted and knows the Bible better than we do! He even tried, unsuccessfully, to tempt the Son of God with the Word that He wrote! (See Matthew 4:5-7) Don’t be deceived. It takes more than gifts, miracles or knowledge of the Bible to be spiritually successful. What moves God is a lifestyle of worship!
