About the Author
James D. Redwood is a professor of law at Albany Law School. He taught English in South Vietnam from 1972 to1974 and returned briefly before the fall of Saigon in April 1975. As a practicing lawyer, he has worked for a law firm in San Francisco and for the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC. Since 1993 he has published short stories based on his experiences in Vietnam in the Virginia Quarterly Review, Black Warrior Review, Kenyon Review, North Dakota Quarterly, TriQuarterly, and the Notre Dame Review.

Great Vietnam War Short Story Collection

James Redwood has used his experience in Vietnam as an English teacher in 1972-1974 as material for a brilliant collection of thirteen stories that shows a history of the Vietnamese dealing with foreign oppressors, including the Chinese, the French and of course, the Americans. These stories are not presented in any rigid chronological order, and they are a lot more story than history, fascinating to read and enjoyable in a sad, reflective way. These are not the clichéd stories of American infantry slogging through jungles and rice paddies fighting to bring democracy to poor little Vietnam. These are elegant literary stories which approach the Vietnam War from a variety of different and always interesting angles. We see a Vietnam veteran trying to find a translator of a letter he looted from the body of a dead VC. We also meet a Vietnam veteran who is now an attorney, but who seeks a soul mate in a San Francisco Chinatown bar to talk to. We meet a man who was made a monster by being torched by napalm, but who still thinks of himself as beautiful. We get a story (The Composer and the Mermaid) which connects Camille Saint-Saens in 1895 in a powerful way. There's even a story which features a young American man teaching English in Vietnam. I won't give away any of the other delights of this book. Please try this astonishing book yourself and enjoy the surprises in every story. This is a Vietnam War short story collection unlike all those that preceded it.

Love beneath the Napalm is an excellent collection of short stories featuring the lives of people as they coped with issues from the Viet Nam war. Each story has a different theme but the various ways people handled their individual issues and concerns made for some great reading. Many of these stories could have been expanded into a full novel.

Mercedes Lackey is one of those who has taken modern fantasy to the human level, and for that I honour her. I've re-read the Vanyel books a number of times, and there's good reason why they remain some of her fans' favourites.
I'd say the one thing that I find most displeasing about the Vanyel books is the arbitrary presence of evil. We're told that the Heralds, the keepers of The Right in Lackey's world of Valdemar, are short lived because they're continually doing battle against BAD THINGS, but it's never really clear what those bad things are, where they come from or why they're bad. Magic's Pawn (and Magic's Price, the last book in the trilogy) ends with the main character doing battle with an evil Mage who seems to exist merely to do bad things to good people. This battle seems tacked on simply to provide a rousing finish to the book; there's very little build up to it and it has almost no connection to the rest of the story. To me, that's lazy writing.
But the story really isn't about that. The story is about Vanyel, his flaws and strengths as a person and his relationships with friends, lovers, and family, and that is done exceedingly well. Lackey has a sure touch depicting the harm people do to people. Vanyel is a misfit both in his family and with his peers and he suffers not only from their treatment but from his defenses against it.
Lackey also went out on a limb making her main character homosexually oriented, and she painted Vanyel's relationship in an honest, genuine way without a lot of stereotyping.
The writing isn't great, but this story is so affecting that you can overlook that. It's easy to see why Lackey's books attract numerous fans.

Simply fantastic.

This is the very first Mercedes Lackey book I ever read... and I very quickly bought not only the second two books in the trilogy, but some more of her writings.
The first reason I picked up Magic's Pawn is the "horse" on the cover, because I am an animal lover. But I sat down on the floor of the bookstore to read a couple pages to get a feel for it, and I could hardly close the book to buy it!
This book is an amazing love story. It does not matter that it is between two males at all -- it is simply portrayed as a deep love bond between two souls. This book actually changed my mind from being squeamish about gays to accepting, supporting, and understanding them.
But more than a love story, it's a record of a boy growing up, learning a lot about himself. Throughout he has the wonderful support of his "horse" Yfandes, who is truely a lady, no matter her shape. She and Vanyel are mind-linked, which helps him through a lot of hard times. They also share a lot of fun bantering and generally affectionate teasing.
If you want a "talking animal" story, get this. If you want a gay love story, get this. If you want a timeless love story, get this. If you want a simply magic story, get this.

Complicated feelings about this one

I truly did enjoy this book. The evidence: I read it in one sitting without feeling groggy or laughing out loud at it. The characters are wonderful, the magic is decently thought out, and the story itself holds the attention enough. Lackey writes with charisma; witty and entertaining from start to finish.

I know some readers will be put off by the homoerotic tendencies in these novels. Well, that's why Amazon puts up these reviews - so one will not be taken completely by surprise. I, for one, have no problem with it, and thought the treatment of the gay relationship was tasteful, respectful, and believable. In a large portion of the fiction I've read, homosexual leanings seem to exist on the villain's side of things, and usually augment the evil that is already exposed. So, I enjoyed the change of pace.

There are problems, however. The characters are worked out very carefully and lovingly, while the plot (i.e. dramatic conflict) lacks exposition and development. In other words, the romantic and personal storylines are very satisfying, while the actual plot threads are weak, transparent, and barely even worth caring about. Lackey seems to want us to care about the far-reaching conflicts (the presence of evil, the threat of war, etc.), but really doesn't force the issue. It is quite clear that the author cares more about the romance than the good vs. evil aspect of her story. I will say that this situation improves in the next two novels in the series, but it doesn't change how glaring the flaws are here.

So, why 5 stars? I'm a sucker for a gay love story. Also, the flaws in this book disappear into the background as the series progresses. After one gets used to the way Lackey tells a story, things begin to fall into place.

A fictitious inside story written by incompetent outsiders with persecution complex

A hot topic which gets cold very fast. Written by two mediocre scandal hunters from Melania's homeland. It's of course not endorsed by Melania and ready for a hefty lawsuit with no definite end winners. A lot of bulls*** already in the title and the authors know it. The world "communist" has nothing to do with Melania and stands there only as a buzzword. It may seam to be a propaganda pamphlet to support the campaign (not being sure who's), and definitely an empty amateur writing, written only to make some money.

Good study on Indian cinema

This book is one of the few around that gives a general account on the many Indian filmographies.

Informative without being too much for experts, has information for even the less popular Indian cinema as the one of Assam, it has a good section on South Indian cinema.

It has been very helpful for my study and one of the few valid resources in English.

Deyue Yan, PhD, is a professor at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, P.R. China, and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Yan has served on the editorial board of Macromolecular Theory and Simulations and is currently on the editorial board of the Chinese Journal of Polymer Science.

Chao Gao, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University, P.R. China. Dr. Gao also serves on the editorial advisory boards of the Open Macromolecules Journal and the Open Process Chemistry Journal.

Holger Frey, PhD, is Full Professor of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at Johnannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany. Dr. Frey has served on the editorial advisory boards of several polymer journals.

About the Author
Mark Koltko-Rivera, Ph.D., holds a doctoral degree from the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University (NYU). He is an elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association. For his scholarship, he has received several awards: the Margaret Gorman Early Career Award in the psychology of religion (from the Society for the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality), the Carmi Harari Early Career Award for Inquiry (Society for Humanistic Psychology), and, on two occasions, the George A. Miller Award for an outstanding recent article on general psychology (Society for General Psychology). He has taught at NYU, the University of Central Florida, and elsewhere. His psychological scholarship has appeared in Review of General Psychology, the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, and Psychotherapy. He was born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City, where he long lived in the East Village. He graduated from Regis High School (NYC), and holds an undergraduate degree from Haverford College (majoring in psychology) and a masters degree from Fordham University (in counseling). Mark Koltko-Rivera converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while attending college. He served for two years as an LDS missionary in the Japan Okayama Mission. He has served in the Church as a home teacher (i.e., priesthood visitor), a Sunday School teacher, a member of a stake high council, and a bishop’s counselor (the rough equivalent of an associate pastor). He has published articles in the independent LDS publications Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought and Sunstone magazine.
