It is a useful, practical guide, easily accessible to dermatologists and nondermatologists alike, to facilitate diagnosis and treatment of the more common skin diseases. A practical yet thorough guide like this is very useful in the field and the book attains its goal splendidly.

**Audience**

Dr. Habif is a leader in the field of dermatology and is a master at imparting information in a clear and concise manner. He writes his book for students, nondermatologists, and dermatologists, and all will find it accessible, useful, easy to read and understand, and worthy of reading.

**Features**

Suggestions on how best to access and glean the most from the book start things off. A few minutes here and this detailed and thorough book becomes an easy and quick guide. Some basic chapters follow on nomenclature, necessary for communication in the field, and on topical steroids, which need to be understood in order to be safely and effectively used. The remainder of the book is divided into classes of disease. Unique features include an expanded online component with surgical procedures, references, and a dermatologic formulary. The latter will be updated and, thus, kept current. An index of disorders on the inside cover enables quick reference. The first page has a two-page index of commonly used medications and the last has a more detailed list of topical steroids. The book is thorough and detailed, yet easy to access quickly and will remain current with the companion web site.

Dr Habif has refined his textbook, and this fifth edition is an easy to access, useful, practical guide that practicing dermatologists can turn to daily, nondermatologists can use to accurately diagnose and treat most of the more common dermatologic conditions, and students can use to learn dermatology in a useful and thorough manner. Because of the great attention paid to every aspect of this book, it is more practical and useful, while remaining thorough and detailed, than any other in dermatology.

Used every day

I am an urgent care physician and have been using an earlier edition and now this edition in my practice. I use it for teaching both students and residents who rotate with me, and often will use it with patients to illustrate why I do (or don't) think their rash is what they think it is. My older edition has started to fall apart and luckily a new edition was available. I have learned so much from the text and feel very confident in my dermatology diagnosis and treatments. I have used other references, but I always come back to my Habif for confirmation. It clearly is the best reference.

Great reference but also written for students.

I got this as a reference book to keep around but before doing my 4th year Derm rotation opened it up and found that it has a nice preface for how a medical student can use it to get up to speed on dermatology. I've only read the first few chapters but it's readable as a text as well as being a well known reference book. They added two chapters in this edition at the beginning that help you to make a differential diagnosis based on the type of lesion and the location.

This reference is easy to use and very informative. Unfortunately, media rights were not granted for many of the figures in the Kindle version so essential information was unexpectedly missing. Be careful when buying this book on Kindle.

A good book!

I really enjoyed reading this story. It takes place during the time of Cromwell and Parliament taking over the British government and kicking out the king. The Beverley children are orphans living with their elderly aunt, near the New Forest. Their father died fighting for the King. A verderer (forest protector) overhears some of the Roundhead soldiers planning on going that night to burn the Beverley mansion down. He gets the children to come and spend the night in his cottage. When the house is burned down, he and the children decide that it is best for them to remain in hiding. He teaches them to hunt, farm and cook. A Cromwell appointee resides on the other side of the forest and also attempts to protect the children. Their adventures are interesting as the author tells the tale in a narrative form, with many different adventures and characters.

Adventure in the King's Forest

Captain Marryat's "THE CHILDREN OF THE NEW FOREST" is a wonderful tale in narrative, historically rich and quite fascinating. This story of adventure, treachery, and love takes place during the English Civil War, when fellow countrymen are found enemies, and are set against each other, Roundhead and Cavalier, Parliament and the King. Many hoped for the same thing: justice. But, for a long time, neither could find it. In the midst of all were the Beverlies, the family of a faithful Cavalier, who died in service of the king. His four children were left orphaned when their mother died of grief. Then, word came to them that the Roundheads were going to burn down their estate, Arnwood. Fate sent them into the hands of an old forester, Jacob Armitage, and they escaped to his cottage. From there, the story unfolds. It is a classic worthy of shelving in libraries, in private or in public collections, recommended by many educators, and by me, with all due praise.

Historical adventure, but not boring

This book was published in 1847 and is set in the time of the English Civil War, some 200 years earlier. The four children of Colonel Beverley are rescued prior to their house being burned to the ground by Roundhead soldiers. They are hidden in the forest and learn to hunt and fend for themselves and grow up. I loved how the characters of the children developed, the way they matured and took on their roles in life. There are some interesting dramas on the way to the happy ending. I loved the detail of life in the 1600s. Very enjoyable.

In statistics, R is the way of the future. The big boys and girls have known this for some time: There are now millions of R users in academia and industry. R is free (as in no cost) and free (as in speech). Andy, Jeremy, and Zoe's book now makes R accessible to the little boys and girls like me and my students. I have been teaching R to psychologists for several years and so I have been waiting for this book for some time. The book is excellent, and it is now the course text for all my statistics classes. I'm pretty sure the book provides all you need to go from statistical novice to working researcher.

Take, for example, the chapter on t-tests. The chapter explains how to compare the means of two groups from scratch. It explains the logic behind the tests, it explains how to do the tests in R with a complete worked example, which papers to read in the unlikely event you do need to go further, and it explains what you need to write in your practical report or paper. But it also goes further, and explains how t-tests and regression are related---and are really the same thing---as part of the general linear model. So this book offers not just the step-by-step guidance needed to complete a particular test, but it also offers the chance to reach the zen state of total statistical understanding.

The main strength of this book is that it presents a lot of information in an accessible, engaging and irreverent way. The style is informal with interesting excursions into the history of statistics and psychology. There is reference to research papers which illustrate the methods explained, and are also very entertaining. About the Author

Andy Field is Professor of Child Psychopathology at the University of Sussex. He has published over 80 research papers, 29 book chapters, and 17 books mostly on child emotional development and statistics. 

He is the founding editor of the Journal of Experimental Psychopathology and has been an associate editor and editorial board member for the British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, Cognition and Emotion, Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review and Research Synthesis Methods. 

His ability to make statistics accessible and fun has been recognized with local and national teaching awards (University of Sussex, 2001, 2015, 2016; the British Psychological Society, 2007), a prestigious UK National Teaching Fellowship (2010), and the British Psychological Society book award (2006). He adores cats (and dogs), and loves to listen to and play very heavy music. He lives in Brighton with his wonderful wife Zoë, his son Zach, his crazy spaniel Ramsey and Fuzzy the cat.

A great introduction to statistics and to R!

Being familiar with the author's SPSS book and wanting to learn R, I leapt at the chance to purchase this book. As I write this, I've been able to go through all the chapters save the last two. The book is a great overview of statistics concepts and provides a gentle, yet comprehensive, introduction to the R language. I'm extremely pleased I bought it.

The author's writing style is conversational and humorous, and some of his examples are outrageous (I didn't know whether to laugh or cry during the logistic regression chapter!). I think this would make the material more accessible to students who are ambivalent about statistics and R. However, though the material is presented in an easy-going manner, it is nevertheless quite comprehensive. The essence of each statistical method is discussed thoroughly, and the procedures for doing these tests in R are clearly detailed in a step by step manner.

What I liked most about the book were the problems at the end of each chapter and the detailed solutions to those problems on the book's accompanying website. I found these excellent for self-study.

To be clear, the book is not the most technical treatise on either statistics or R. The book gives a good overview of the concepts of each statistical method, but computation is kept to a minimum. Similarly, while the book describes how to create functions in R and has several challenging examples, you will only scratch the surface of what R can do. It seems intended primarily for non-mathematics undergraduate students who aspire to doing research in their fields. However, for someone like me who wanted a context in which to become familiar with R, it is invaluable.

The main problem I can see with the book was that there were some missing files for some of the end-of-chapter problems. I, personally, didn't think it was all that bad, as the same data was used in the author's SPSS book and I knew where to look for those SPSS files. Search for "field3e spss files" on your internest search engine of choice. In summary, this is a great book if you want a basic, yet very comprehensive, overview of statistics concepts and want to start your journey into R. Again, I'm very pleased I purchased it!

The Best Introduction to Statistics Available

Andy Field writes some of the most intuitive and entertaining accounts of statistics available, and this book is no exception to that standard. This book is geared towards those who want to start from the beginning and progress through a complete account of the most common methods in statistics based on the general linear model. If you are a beginner, this is one of the best places to start. If you are experienced, this book is a great reference to have around.

The most enjoyable aspect of this book, aside from its humor, is that Field addresses issues of using robust statical methods when assumptions are not met in the data. Instead of glossing over the issues, Field provides the most recent findings in the field and even examples of how to run robust tests in R. However, note if you want to do something very complicated with robust methods, this book is not a cure all, and you would be hard pressed to find one that is.

With regards to R, this book will get you up and running with R even if you have no previous experience with R or programming languages in general. However, a few of the R libraries have changed since this edition's publication, so you will need to search a bit to fix a few errors, but it's not hard and is good practice.

Finally, I must mention that Andy Field has gone out of his way to provide datasets and examples like no other author I have encountered. The book has a companion website full of these datasets and all of the R scripts used in the book. Additionally, the companion website is packed full of extra material for each chapter in the book. Finally, Field has several videos posted to the website which includes a lecture series on statistics.

The book contents are very good, but the quality of the book is poor. I ordered one paperback and the pages were falling of the book in one month of use. I returned the book and the second book that I have received has the same problem. The page were falling of again. I'm very careful using the book, and it look like new. I believe it happened because of the poor quality.
I recommend buy the hard cover. I'm very frustrated about that. I have attached 2 pics (1st book and the 2nd book).

Don't trust the "guarantee"

It is a useful study tool. As other reviews have stated, there are a couple of mistakes here and there, particularly in spelling. There are discrepancies between what this book says and a couple of online sources I have found. E.g. if a drug expires 03/2016, this book says it expires 03/01/2016 while other sources say it expires 03/31/2016. If you are buying this book to study from only, I highly recommend getting a second book or using other resources. I didn't take any classes and after taking just one practice test from a website, this book is making me question some of the things I read in it.

tl;dr You can use this to study, but don't study from ONLY this.

update after the exam:
This book was probably useful for about 30% of the test. USE OTHER SOURCES IN ADDITION TO THIS ONE OR INSTEAD OF THIS ONE. I studied with online resources also and still completely guessed on 20/90 questions. Some of those were drugs, and I didn't study drugs at all, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But I passed the test--make sure to read questions carefully and use common sense+a healthcare mindset, not a patient's mindset.

I am no grammatical queen but when I notice this many mistakes it is concerning. Basic errors that should have easily been caught in editing. Makes me question the accuracy of the information they are providing as well. I also question the content covered in this book it doesn't match what is published on the PTCB website for test material.

PERFECT. Exactly what I needed. I used to be a Pharmacy Technician so I know what I'm getting myself into. It's been a few years since I allowed my license expire. I decided to be a stay a home parent to my kids. With the way things are going finacially, its time to hit the books and get back into the field. I saw this and skimmed before ordering. Seemed to all the material I needed for a refresher. My husband (who has zero Pharmacy Technician experience or knowledge.) will be using this with my help to study as well.

Steven P. Lee is Donald R. Harter Professor in Humanities at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. He is the author of Morality, Prudence, and Nuclear Weapons (Cambridge University Press, 1993) and What Is the Argument? Critical Thinking in the Real World (2002), the editor of Intervention, Terrorism, and Torture: Contemporary Challenges to Just War Theory (2007) and the co-editor of Ethics and Weapons of Mass Destruction (Cambridge University Press, 2004).

Pretty good introduction to Just War Theory

Dr. Lee has written a pretty good introduction to Just War Theory in this well-organized and clearly written work. He combines a solid introduction to the theoretical aspects of the topic with plenty of real world examples. It is written at a level appropriate for the college student who wants to learn about the ethics of war, and it would make a fine introductory textbook for a class dealing with that issue. The greatest strength of this book is the outlined structure that Lee used, helping the reader organize the material in her own mind. It is also helpful for anyone wishing to jump to (or skip) certain sections. This would also be quite useful for an instructor who could tell students, "Today we're going to look at section 2.2, 'The origins of the just war tradition.'"

What I was less impressed by was Lee's own politics entering the conversation in subtle ways. For an introduction of this nature, it seemed inappropriate, and sometimes a bit dishonest. While students might not notice the ax he has to grind, he is nonetheless doing so. There were also places where I was disappointed in his analysis. For example, on p. 22, he announces that particularistic pacifism is not "a moral view at all" because it is not "universalistic." This completely ignores approaches to ethics with a long foundation in eastern religion/philosophy as well as Roman Catholicism.

Over all, if one is looking for a good introduction to just war theory, and can remember that Lee is not the final word on the subject, I could recommend this book. I certainly benefited from reading it.

Great Overview of Just War Theory

A must read for an introductory course to morality of war. The text is clear and well-organized allowing for the material to be easily understood.

Textbook for Philosophy of War Class

Horrible text book. I got an A in the class in spite of Steven P., Lee. Lets play a drinking game and have a shot every time Lee says Jus Ad Bellum.
