A Self-Help Book for our Ailing Society

This book is an important major critical analysis of American social thought and legal theory. It provides us with a surprising, contemporary look at divorced American fathers, as well as American families and our society in general. With this book, Jeffery Leving also launches a radical critique of conventional legal thought and social reality, which has been too often used to camouflage the culture of gender bias and injustice. This is one of the most provocative books written by an American lawyer in recent years. Although titled as a self-help book for divorced fathers, it is in reality much more - a self-help book for our ailing society. It is my hope that this book will be the basis for new discussions concerning the effects of gender bias upon future generations of Americans and cause us to identify, reassess and correct those biases.

This puts it all in perspective. It's good to see that there is someone who understands that divorced dads need help and guidance. No one knows everything so it's good to get good advice where all perspectives are covered with rational explanations.

A poignant tale

Avinash has witnessed the ugly side of life that has left a permanent mark in him. His trauma has consumed him for many years until he meets fresh, vibrant Juhi whose life is pure, simple and beautiful. How she manages to engulf him in that and helps him leave his gory past behind is said in a realistic, touching manner that brought tears to my eyes many times. Their talks that sometimes included sentences in French, their close knit group of friends, their supportive family, every character and every aspect has been well written and treated with the utmost care.

The premise of this story makes you want to dig deep into your soul and look for answers. The last chapter was very emotional, clearly showing it was time to heal and move on, not only for Avinash but for all of them. And that very healing comes across in the epilogue which is in direct contrast to the prologue. An excellent story!!

Very emotional novel with a strong heroine!

The author is excellent at depicting emotions, all the roller coaster feelings that the characters are experiencing...we can also feel it! And the scene where the hero explained what he had been thru broke me down...it was so well written! Loved the heroine of this novel for her attitude and her spirit!

Tragedy with Romance as the Theme

Beyond the Past begins in suspense as the hero leaves his friends a goodbye email. I enjoyed the story until I got to the horrific event the hero experienced to cause him to leave. This author on numerous occasions has been able to reduce me to tears (so buyers beware) of joy and pain.

One issue that I struggled with were the various characters. Because this book is based in India, the names were different so I had to write down the names and gender to remember who's who. I didn't write the parents name so I kept getting confused on who was talking (my issue not the book). Great read that I recommend and hope you enjoy.

About the Author
Born to the great lively city of Manhattan, NY, and raised in quiet Connecticut. Denise started writing  when drawing and painting were not enough. Deciding to try a new type of medium, she thought to start with poetry. After her first success and first reading at the age of fifteen. Her writing began to take on new life with her own worlds of fantasy, time travel, action, adventure and of course romance.

A Sweet and Nostalgic Romance

It's been a long time since I've read a sweet romance, and this short was just the ticket to start me off in a new reading direction. In a day when everything "has" to be hot and hotter, when we're seeing menages with 12 men and one woman, it was a refreshing blast of fresh air to see one young woman fall in love with one young man and make an homage to the past in doing so.

Mira's living a devastated present in 2008, even though she might put on a brave face. But memories of her father's favorite movie take her into a past life of sorts, where she meets and falls for a young man named James. James Dean.

Sweet & Quick Read!

Consoling Angel was a very sweet story. Mira is dealing with the pain of the present, and needs to escape. I liked that she escaped into the past to meet a historical celebrity that not only had some influence in her own life, but that many of us remember as a cultural icon. It was a fast read, one you can escape with on your commute to work or on your lunch break.

Refreshing Voice and Charming Story

I loved this story and will be looking for more from this author. The story takes the reader into the past where we get to meet an icon, James Dean, bringing us back to a nostalgic era in an enjoyable way. He is weaved into the story in such a way that it is not only believable, but works well for this plot and its characters.

Consoling Angel is a sweet, young adult story, but I think it is suitable and will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. The author's voice is refreshing and her skill at writing meaningful prose, fully developed characters that are both likeable and relatable. I really liked the way the author was able to connect two time periods, present time and the 1950's. It takes the reader back with the well written description and introspection. This hidden jewel of a book will appeal to readers who love time travel, fantasy, a tight plot filled with many metaphors for life, and a heroine you can root for until the very end.

The fantasy aspect of the story was so well written, that one can believe Mira met James Dean. This story is a page turner, as Mira travels back in time, knowing James Dean's fate. It's an interesting and new concept and I highly recommend this book.

A powerful chronicle of borders

Being myself a migrant who walked the same border as Kapllani did, it was a pleasure reading this book.

"A Short Border Handbook" is a compelling memoir of Kapllani's tour de force experience with borders that not only wittingly talks about migration of Albanian people for better life in the world-beyond-the-Iron Curtains, but at the same time can illuminate and serve worldwide as a good reference for recognizing and understanding the `border syndrome' in struggling `to make it' immigrants.

This is a great book that one could read in either English or Greek language.

simple but powerful

I was impressed that this small book, written in very simple language, can be so powerful, and actually, unforgettable. I think the secret lies in the ability of the author to write personal reflections in the way an actual human being would write them, not an "intellectual" or an academic. The "innocence" of Kapllani's style is powerful, but never overpowering. It is his first book and he often seems shy, which accidentally fits the role of an immigrant in a foreign country. There is no theorizing here, just life. This book, exactly because of its accessibility, should be required reading in all the rich nations across the globe.

An enjoyable trip back to 1990s Signet Regencies.

These two stories tie in nicely as sequels to Dark Angel/Lord Carew's Bride, re-released together in February 2010. Although, for me, Balogh's superior work is found in her longer "Slightly" series, a few of the "Simply" books, and perhaps my personal favorite, The Secret Pearl, her shorter Signet Regencies from the 1990s are top-of-the-line in that category and make for a feel-good read.

THE FAMOUS HEROINE is the story of Cora Downes, whose family has money but no blue blood. She "rescues" the nephew of the Duke of Bridgwater from drowning and is taken on by the duke's mother as a project to be introduced to society and married off to someone eligible, but not super blue-blooded. This story is funny, starts off delightfully and I found myself chuckling many times. The hero, Lord Francis Kneller, younger son of a duke, is the suitor rejected by Samantha in LORD CAREW'S BRIDE and he's still nursing a broken heart. He befriends Cora as a favor to his friend Bridgwater and finds her to be a pleasant distraction from his misery and entertaining company.

Now, Francis favors wearing clothes of all the colors of the rainbow, pink, puce, turquoise, vivid green, you name it, dressed up with lace and elaborately-tied cravats, and he's always immaculately coiffed. Cora, who is totally intimidated by most members of the ton, finds herself comfortable in his company. She also mistakes his sexual orientation, so she enjoys him as a friend and not as a possible suitor. It's all good fun, but somewhere past the halfway point of the story, I was beginning to tire of Cora's ineptness in society and Francis's broken heart, so it wasn't a 5-star romance for me, in spite of the good writing and the satisfying ending.

THE PLUMED BONNET is a bit more angsty and I enjoyed it more. It's another upper-class/middle-class romance, but less humorous. Balogh always does a good job of convincing the reader that young, handsome, rich dukes of excellent character existed in Regency England and that romance with a lovely heroine of lesser breeding would have challenges but is perfectly doable (at least by the end of the story). Her Cinderella stories have always appealed to me more than those of other writers using the same theme, perhaps because of her sympathetic characters and the trademark Balogh style of writing.

Our hero here is the Duke of Bridgwater, of the family that sponsored Cora in the first story. He's on the road traveling and meets up with hitchhiking (Imagine that!) heroine Stephanie Gray. Stephanie is respectable but impoverished and had been working as a governess when she was informed that she has inherited property and lots of money. Instead of waiting for the transportation which was to be sent for her, she sets off on her own but mishaps along the way have her penniless and unable to continue her journey to Sindon Park, her inheritance. She even loses her own cloak and bonnet and is forced to wear a borrowed fuchsia cloak and pink bonnet with pink, fuchsia and purple plumes. In her moneyless desperation she is walking to her destination, without even coins to purchase a meal for herself.

Alistair, the duke, spies her walking the road. Well, she's hard to miss in that get-up. He's bored and feeling unsatisfied with his life so, mistaking her for a lady of ill-repute, he decides to spice up his life with her company and offers her a ride. The rest you just have to read. The beginning is a lot of fun, what with the mistaken impressions both have of each other. When circumstances force Alistair to offer marriage to Stephanie, the rest of the book is about the expectations they have for each other, the importance of communication, and the need to be true to who you are. The characters are well-drawn and sympathetic, the writing is excellent and the ending is just about perfect.

a great buy: two memorable romances

Mary Balogh is an exceptional writer. Though these are not my favorite romances by
Balogh, they are very entertaining. Likeable characters, solid plots, a detailed world,
plus excellent command of language make these novels easy 5's. They continue the story
started in Dark Angel/Lord Carew's Bride. In Dark Angel,
Samantha Newman plays a secondary part, hurt by a villain. In Lord Carew's
Bride, Samantha is the heroine. She marries Lord Carew (shortly after meeting him) and
rejects Lord Kneller (who had pursued her for years). The Duke of Bridgwater
and Kneller (though Kneller certainly was badly hurt by Samantha's rejection) helped
Samantha's match with Carew.

In The Famous Heroine, the Duke of Bridgwater asks Kneller (his close friend)
to help Bridgwater's mother launch a young woman Cora Downes into society. Cora has no
pretensions to any noble lineage, but her father is a very wealthy merchant.
Bridgwater's mother, who is very class conscious, wants to help Cora get an
acceptable marriage, because she "saved" the life of Bridgwater's heir's
heir. "Save" is in quotes because the story of Cora's heroism has gotten ridiculously out of
hand. Ultimately Cora's disregard of convention leads to a forced marriage to
Kneller. Cora likes Kneller, but is convinced for silly reasons, that he will not be able
to father children (and all that goes with it, which though she is unclear on
what it all is, she would prefer to have it than not). Everything works out (of course).

In The Plumed Bonnet, Bridgwater, who is very sophisticated and urbane gets
hoisted by his own petard into a forced marriage with the Stephanie Gray.
There is a lot of humor here, which I will not spoil. Stephanie is a
poorly-treated governess, who inherited great wealth with an unpleasant
proviso that she needed to be quickly married part. She had resigned herself
to a life without love or the companionship of marriage, and the forced
nature of the marriage makes her doubt that marriage to Bridgwater will be in
name only. This being a Balogh romance, the doubts are eventually quashed.)

I want more stars to give The Famous Heroine.

Love, love, love this book. Regencies often feature a misunderstanding between the main characters as they work forward towards a good relationship, and this misunderstanding is a dozy. The heroine assumes that the hero is gay, up to and including their wedding night.

Lord Francis Kneller, the rejected suitor from Lord Carew's Bride, and surely the most charming of Balogh's heroes, agrees to help bring cit Cora Downes, sponsored by the Duchess of Bridgewater after saving her small grandson from drowning, into fashion and in the process becomes embroiled in many of the impetuous Cora's "unfortunate" escapades, many of which simply seem to happen to her.

Filled with delightful farce and humor and people who actually like each other.

Francis' wise decision to be amused by Cora instead of offended by her makes him a happy man. A good object lesson in how we can all make our lives happy by how we decide to respond to what we cannot control in our lives.

I am looking forward to rereading this one in a few years. Right up there with the best of Georgette Heyer.

About the Author
John Coburn grew up in the Hawaiian Islands, the seventh of sixteen children. He received his Associate of Arts degree in 1977 from Windward Community College, where he graduated with honors. In 1979 he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Hawaii. After being lured into the business world for five years, he returned to his first love, accepting a teaching position in high school mathematics where he was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1987. Soon afterward, the decision was made to seek a Masters Degree, which he received two years later from the University of Oklahoma. For the last fifteen years, he has been teaching mathematics at the Florissant Valley campus of St. Louis Community College, where he is now a full professor. During his tenure there he has received numerous nominations as an outstanding teacher by the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, two nominations to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and was recognized as Teacher of the year in 2004 by the Mathematics Educators of Greater St. Louis (MEGSL). He has made numerous presentations and local, state and national conferences on a wide variety of topics. His other loves include his family, music, athletics, games and all things beautiful, and hopes this love of life comes through in his writing, and serves to make the learning experience an interesting and engaging one for all students.

Awesome Book

This book is worth every penny. I am confident in the fact that I could miss every lecture and still be completely cognizant of the material come the day of the test because the book lays everything out clearly. I am fascinated by the thought provoking applications in this book as well as its straight forward teaching methodology which has ignited my enthusiasm in math/science.

Textbook for Prerequisite class

This book is very well organized. I like how the author gives the numbers of the problems to work on after each example. I need this class before I can go on to Calc I and I think it is a good tool!

Great Product!

The John W. Coburn Precalculus book is a well written book. It was required for my precalculus class and I used it everyday to complete my homework. The odd solutions are in the back of the book; however, I like seeing the step by step progression of the problem listed in the answer manual. Therefore, I decided to buy both products together. Be Aware that only odd solutions are given in this Precalculus book. Also, in the solutions manual, there are only odds listed as well with the step by step progression of the problem. There are no answers or step by step explanation in this book for the even numbered problems. My teacher decided to assign problems from both; however, the evens were eligible to be collected for a grade.
