About the Author
Alan J. Marcus is a Professor of Finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. His main research interests are in derivatives and securities markets. He is co-author (with Zvi Bodie and Alex Kane) of the texts Investments and Essentials of Investments. Professor Marcus has served as a research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Marcus also spent two years at Freddie Mac, where he helped to develop mortgage pricing and credit risk models. He currently serves on the Research Foundation Advisory Board of the CFA Institute.

Zvi Bodie is professor of finance and economics at Boston University School of Management. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has served on the finance faculty at Harvard Business School and MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Professor Bodie has published widely on pension finance and investment strategy in leading professional journals. His books include Worry-Free Investing: A safe Approach to Achieving your Lifetime Financial Goals and Foundations of Pension Finance. Professor Bodie is managing director of Integrated Finance Limited, a specialized investment bank and financial engineering company. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Pension Research Council. 

Professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He has been visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and pricing of options.

Okay book but the e-book version doesn't include the same materials.

The book covers the subject matter well. I think the authors do a fine job of explaining different investments. However, I purchased the digital edition and it does not come with the additional online resources. I was very disappointed by this because the text links directly to the Mcgraw Hill online learning center which provides excel templates which are useful in doing the homework and investment analysis. It does not state anywhere in the information that you do not get the online access codes. I would recommend the physical copy so you can get the access code. I usually prefer e-books as it is easier to carry them and have all the books you need for classes in one place but this is just another example of how buying books online over complicates the process of picking the right book.

Comprehensive and worth reading

I use this book for my Investments course at Dartmouth, and I find it to be a very useful companion text. It is extremely comprehensive, with sections on pretty much everything you would want within this sphere. it is also relatively readable, with a logical layout and good explanations for most of the main points.

The downsides is that it is very expensive, although no ore so that other similar texts. Overall, it comes very recommended for those who wish to develop a strong understanding of capital markets and investing.

Good but not perfect. Caters to the CFA takers

This book deals primarily with equity and bond investment finance. This is not a general finance book. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book, for example, to those who want to study corporate finance.

The book does a quite good, but not perfect, job of explaining the elegant finance subject matters such as CAPM, bond pricing, and risk management. For example, although I knew that higher stocks with higher Beta must have higher return than stocks with lower Beta (assuming CAPM is true), the book never bothers to explain precisely why. One must deduct the reasons from the CAPM assumptions and equations, which is not always intuitive.

The book also provides second set of questions for those who are studying for the CFA. I don't know how closely the book's questions resembles the real CFA questions.

I wish the book had more Excel examples and problems. Although the book does not ignore Excel, most of the problems and solutions involve using a calculator. Given that Excel, not the calculator, is the principle tool of finance (and even Excel is being upstaged by data analytics using terabytes of data), I thought the book was little too old fashioned in its examples, problems, and solutions.

Overall, this is a nice textbook with some of the best explainations of finance concepts I have ever read.

A good book...buy it

I have been teaching the bible for over 30 years. I believe we should never stop learning, that means you can always learn something from someone else. I gave this book only three stars for 2 reasons. First i did learn a few new insights. Most of it was very basic. Second there were several chapters where I think it was more of perry's theology made to fit into. The scriptures. That being said I still would encourage people to read this book.

Green's comprehensive analysis highlights the effects that factors such as class background, marital status, educational level, and attitudes about race and gender roles had in inspiring the region's women to work in favor of, or in opposition to, their own enfranchisement.
Green sketches the ranks of both movements--which included women and men, black and white--and identifies the ways in which issues of class, race, and gender determined the composition of each side. Coming from a wide array of beliefs and backgrounds, Green argues, southern women approached enfranchisement with an equally varied set of strategies and ideologies. Each camp defined and redefined itself in opposition to the other. But neither was entirely homogeneous: issues such as states' rights and the enfranchisement of black women were so divisive as to give rise to competing organizations within each group. By focusing on the grassroots constituency of each side, Green provides insight into the whole of the suffrage debate.

Both of these new titles provide a biographical and political base for dealing with the feminist and political aspects of the women's suffrage movement in the United States, but they examine different time periods and regions. Matthews (Toward a New Society; American Thought and Culture 1800-1830, Macmillan, 1990) looks at the roots of the Northern women's suffrage crusade in the reform movements of the liberal, religious middle class. Her focus is the feminist activity of the movement rather than the social history of women's lives. She covers no new ground, and her decision to list sources at the end, rather than to provide notes, makes tracing her ideas difficult. Still, she provides a good summary for the casual reader and a textbook for history students. In contrast, Green (history, Sweet Briar Coll.) concentrates on the feminist politics of the Southern suffragist (primarily antisuffragist) movement of the postbellum South. Through her examination of over 800 middle-class women, both from the rank-and-file as well as those in leadership roles, Green presents a more holistic picture of women's rights in the region. She looks at the effects of urbanization, race, and states rights on the organization and activities on both sides of the suffrage question. The result is a fresh look at the Southern women's suffrage question, which had previously been considered only on a state-by-state basis and through the eyes of movement leaders. About the Author

Jackson Spielvogel is associate professor emeritus of history at The Pennsylvania State University.  He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in such journals as Moreana, Journal of General Education, Catholic Historical Review, Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte , and American Historical Review. He has also contributed chapters or articles to The Social History of the Reformation, The Holy Roman Empire: A Dictionary Handbook, Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual of Holocaust Studies, and Utopian Studies. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation for study and research in Nürnberg, Germany, and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western civilization courses as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. He is the author of Western Civilization, published in 1991 (seventh edition, 2009). He is the coauthor (with William Duiker) of World History, first published in 1998 (sixth edition, 2010), and The Essential World History (third edition, 2008).

 

Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. He held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award in 1988-1989. In 1996 he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty Member and in 2000 the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

  

 

David Redles received his Ph.D. in history from Pennsylvania State University and is currently associate professor of history at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. He is author of Hitler’s Millennial Reich: Apocalyptic Belief and the Search for Salvation (hardcover: 2005, paperback: 2008). He also contributed essays to the following publications: The Fundamentalist Mindset: Psychological Perspectives on Religion, Violence, and History, Charles B. Strozier and David M. Terman, and James W. Jones, eds. (2010); End of Days: Essays on the Apocalypse from Antiquity to Modernity, Karolyn Kinane and Michael A. Ryan, eds. (2009); and War in Heaven/Heaven on Earth: Theories of the Apocalyptic, Glen McGhee and Stephen O’Leary, eds. (2005).

This book was great value for money and is a fascinating read. Anyone interested in European History should definitely consider reading it! The condition is fair: there is a lot of purple underlining that makes it difficult to read in places, but other than that, I greatly recommend it!
