About the Author

Stefan Jurasinski is Associate Professor of English at the State University of New York at Brockport. His published work has focused on aspects of Anglo-Saxon legal history and on the literature of the early and late Middle Ages. He is at work currently on a book-length study of the Old English penitentials and a collaborative edition (with Lisi Oliver) of the laws of Alfred and Ine for the Early English Laws Project.

R.D. Fulk is Class of 1964 Chancellor's Professor of English at Indiana University. His research centres on Germanic and Celtic languages and literatures of the Middle Ages (with special emphasis on Old English and Old Norse studies), and on comparative Indo-European linguistics, with particular attention to the history of the English language.

A good introduction to General Relativity

What is unique in this book is that it has the Gödel cosmological solution to

the general relativity equations. It has a good coverage of Weyl's gauge

equations as well and a discussion of the

topological implications of black holes.

The mathematics is well done and relatively easy to follow.

This text is a classic text on gravity theory.

My Favorite Book on General Relativity

This second edition of the Adler, Bazin and Schiffer book is nothing short of miraculous. I have read it off and on for 25 years, and I always manage to learn something new from it. Although it cannot compete with the more recent texts on post-Newtonian mechanics, everything is here for the advanced undergraduate/beginning graduate student: tensor calculus; Riemannian and non-Riemannian geometries; tensor applications in electrodynamics; variational methods; Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes; Killing vectors; and much, much more. An entire chapter is devoted to Weyl's gauge-invariant theory and Wheeler's "already unified" field theory. If you have been completely turned off by Misner-Wheeler-Thorne's Gravitation book (along with its somewhat pretentious and totally confusing annotations and sidebar material), and yet you still want to learn a decent amount of general relativity, buy this book while copies are still available. I'm still hoping that a third edition (with a chapter on computer applications) will eventually hit the shelves.

In his preface to the 1998 reissue, Michael Foot wrote, 'Guilty Men was conceived by three London journalists who had formed the habit of meeting on the roof of the Evening Standard offices in Shoe Lane, Fleet Street, just after the the afternoon paper had been put to bed and, maybe, just before the Two Brewers opened across the road.'

The book's genesis and publication could hardly have been swifter. Its writing took four days from the 1st to the 4th June 1940: it was published on the 5th July. It is an angry book, indeed, a devastatingly effective polemic. Its target was the appeasers of the 1930s, the leading culprits being Baldwin, Chamberlain and Halifax who had left the country so ill-prepared, and who, by their pusillanimity, had emboldened Hitler and Mussolini; and in the case of the last two still favoured some accommodation with the fascist dictators. In today's parlance, it would be called a wake-up call. It was very successful selling about 200,000 copies.

Kenneth Morgan, Michael Foot's biographer, describes the book as consisting of 'a series of brief vignettes of key episodes or personalities, the latter invariably foolish or dishonest.' Michael Foot wrote eight of the chapters, the first and most powerful one being on Dunkirk.

Although Michael Foot was the main contributor, and the one who suggested 'Cato' as the umbrella pseudonym, the other two, as Michael Foot would be the first to admit, Peter Howard and Frank Own should not be forgotten.

Seventy years on, Guilty Men has not lost its readability and power to enrage.

When the pen can be sharper than the sword.

Written in the white heat of anger by three left of centre political journalists and rushed into publication just as Churchill became Prime Minister of a shattered nation staring down the barrel of almost certain defeat by Nazi Germany, "Guilty Men" remains one of the freshest and powerful denunciations of political arrogance and negligence ever written. The swords of WWII are rusty and forgotten, but this work of the pen endures. It is polemic of the highest kind - focused, informed and brutal in its judgement, marshalling fact and rhetoric to devastating effect. For any student of politics or history, this little book is a must read not just as a devastating critique of appeasement, but more importantly as a reminder of what responsibilities the elected leaders of any democracy bear and how easily they can delude themselves and their followers in the pursuit of the soft options. Vigilance must be eternal.

About the Author
Ann Wortinger, LVT, VTS (ECC), is the program coordinator for the Veterinary Technology Program at Wayne State University, teaching clinical pathology. With 16 years experience in Internal medicine, Ann founded and coordinated care for the nutritional support service at a major specialty/referral hospital. She obtained her specialty certification in emergency and critical care in 2000, and is a founding member of the Academy of Internal Medicine of Veterinary Technicians, experienced in general practice, emergency and specialty medicine.

Great Resource for Pet Owner and Technician Alike

I've read dozens of books tailored for the consumer as references on companion animal nutrition. I find that most of them are written by poorly qualified authors, with minimal emphasis on current science. This book is the exception. It offers an excellent background in biochemistry necessary for an understanding of nutrition fundamentals. The writer uses language that is accessible to the lay-person, as long as they have at least a basic background in biology and chemistry. The first few chapters discuss the six basic nutrient categories, and basic points of their metabolism. The focus of the book is to instruct the reader on basic metabolism and nutritional needs during various lifestages. This book should be in the collection of any pet-nutrition enthusiast.
